After years of time travel, bloody wars and wholesome reunions, Starz's fantasy romance series is finally concluding with Outlander Season 8, scheduled to premiere on March 6. The show, which premiered in August 2014, is based on Diana Gabaldon's series of books.

While the early seasons each adapted a single novel from the author’s series, the more recent seasons combined elements from two books to broaden the narrative scope. Outlander Season 7 roughly concluded with Book 7 titled An Echo in the Bone, leaving Books 8, 9 and the unwritten Book 10 for the final season.

As per Gabaldon, Outlander Season 8 will adapt stories from Book 8 titled Written in My Own Heart's Blood, Book 9 titled Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone and a specific conclusion crafted for the show. Since Book 10 titled A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out is still unfinished, the show will not feature its elements and will release a different ending. Responding to a fan online, the author wrote:

"There's only so much I can say about the show, but what I can say is that it really won't resemble the end of the book series.''

More on this in our story.

Which Diana Gabaldon books will Outlander Season 8 adapt?

The premiere date is set and Starz's popular historical series is gearing up to bid farewell to fans with Outlander Season 8. With so much of Gabaldon’s expansive source material still unexplored, fans can’t help but wonder how the series plans to pack all that rich lore into just ten episodes. While the first season was the closest to the source material, the show took a different route (from Gabaldon's books) in the subsequent seasons.

Gabaldon solved this mystery for a fan online and revealed which books will be adapted for Outlander Season 8. She said:

"Coming into Season 8, the show-runners have/had only ten episodes (rather than the sixteen, say, in Season One)--and material from THREE WHOLE BOOKS to fit into that. Season 7 ends (roughly) with AN ECHO IN THE BONE, leaving WRITTEN IN MY OWN HEART'S BLOOD, GO TELL THE BEES THAT I AM GONE, and BOOK TEN almost untouched."

Since the author is still writing the final book, it will likely not be adapted in Outlander Season 8 but Jamie and Claire's story will have a befitting and definitive conclusion in the Starz series. The creators will not spoil Gabaldon's book ending for her avid readers and the show will feature a different ending from the books.

Gabaldon added:

''They can fit roughly 10% of the book's content into the show. How much of the (VERY roughly speaking) 1,200,000 words of those three books do you think they can get into ten hours of television? Obviously, they're going to have to cherry-pick some prime scenes/threads to film, and try to fit them into a framework that makes sense for one season, and that they can bring to a reasonably satisfactory conclusion."

What can you expect from Outlander Season 8?

Outlander Season 8 will kickstart Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie's (Sam Heughan) journey back to Fraser's Ridge after they decided to step away from the American Revolution in the previous season. After seven seasons of death and war, the couple will return to their home but problems will follow them there. As Jamie and Claire restart their domestic life, they will have to face old & new enemies and family secrets that could upend their lives.

On the other hand, it was hinted that Brianna and Roger will return to the past and finally live with their parents for good. Now that Mandy is safe, the couple can finally take the plunge and have their happy ending with their parents and extended family.

Outlander Season 8 will also mark the return of newlyweds Young Ian and Rachel and the fan-favorite couple, Marsali and Fergus. While the latter was suspiciously absent from Season 7, after their move to New Bern, they will return for the show's final chapter.

In addition to Heughan and Balfe, the final season will bring back the main ensemble cast, namely Richard Rankin, Sophie Skelton, John Bell, Izzy Meikle-Small, César Domboy, Lauren Lyle, Charles Vandervaart and David Berry.

Tune in to the Outlander Season 8 premiere on Starz on March 6, 2026.
