The penultimate episode of Palm Royale Season 2 unraveled a secret that had been buried since the premiere of Apple TV's period comedy drama. Carol Burnett's character finally reveals to Linda that she is her mother and that Norma isn't her real name; it's actually Agnes.
In a Variety interview, the Carol Burnett Show star revealed the origin story of the name Agnes and how it's connected to her. She stated that the name came into existence when she was asked to do a sitcom in 1967 on CBS titled 'Here's Agnes'. Although she did not do the sitcom, she stated the creator of the Apple TV series 'remembered' the sitcom and used the name in the latest episode. She stated:
"[“Palm Royale” creator] Abe [Sylvia] remembered that. And that’s why he gave her that name."
More on this in our story.
Palm Royale Season 2: Connection between Carol Burnett and her name in the Apple TV series
In Episode 9 of Palm Royale Season 2, Laura Dern's character Linda is sent to a church by Evelyn, where she finally finds some peace from her intensely adventurous journey this season. However, the peace does not last for long as she finds a jaw-dropping surprise in the church.
As they sit and begin talking, she also learns an unexpected secret about her own life. Norma, played by Carol Burnett, asks her to call her by her real name, Agnes, as she does not want to hide her real identity anymore. She further reveals that Linda is actually her biological daughter. Norma/Agnes reveals to Linda that her father, Skeet, and she had an affair, after which she was born.
However, she had to give her up because at that time it would have been a scandal that would harm everyone involved; therefore, Linda was adopted by Skeet and his wife, and Agnes had to hide the information for this long. In the Variety interview, Burnett opened up about Norma's story near the end of Palm Royale Season 2 and how it showed her in a different light now, and stated:
"I love the fact that she’s redeemable in the end."
Along with that, she also talked about the origin of her character's name. While Norma was created for the show, she shared how the name Agnes was connected with her. She revealed that in 1967 she was offered to do a sitcom by the vice president of CBS, as doing a variety show was for men and not women, and instead suggested that she star in a sitcom named Here's Agnes. She said:
"The CBS vice president didn’t want me to have an hour-long comedy variety show. ‘It’s a man’s game, and it’s not for women.’ And he said, ‘We’ve got this great sitcom that we’d love you to do, called, ‘Here’s Agnes.’ I said, ‘I don’t want to be Agnes every week."
However, Burnett wanted a variety show and not a sitcom, which resulted in her starring in the iconic The Carol Burnett Show. While she became an icon with her variety show and did not do the sitcom, she revealed that the name used in Palm Royale comes from the same story as Apple TV's creator, Abe Sylvia, who remembered it and decided to use it in the series.
