Paradise premiered on Hulu earlier this year, and the Sterling K. Brown-led show was an instant success. A testament to its popularity, Hulu promptly renewed Paradise for a second season while the first season was still airing midway. The production on the second installment is currently believed to be underway.
Paradise creator Dan Fogelman recently spoke about the show in an interview with Variety magazine, dropping hints about how long the show might run and how he plans to end it.
Here’s everything that you need to know.
Dan Fogelman plans for Paradise to stretch across three seasons
Speaking with Variety magazine as part of its Writer’s Room event, Paradise creator Dan Fogelman stated that he plans for the Hulu show to last for three seasons. Fogelman further explained:
"I know, generally, how many episodes I want to do, but then once you have those markers, you say, that's act one, that's act 2, and that's act 3. If you set that, it's a really lucky place to be, but it can be really helpful, even if it's ten seasons."
While the show has been praised for its quick pacing and compelling performances, its survival element remains one of its biggest draws. For instance, the narrative of the Hulu show follows Sterling K. Brown’s Secret Service agent Xavier Collins being called upon to investigate the murder of President Cal Bradford, played by James Marsden.
Now, Marsden played a central role in the show's marketing material leading up to the premiere of the debut season. It was quite a shock to find out that he would be killed off in the first episode itself. Fogelman, however, cleverly used flashbacks to get the most out of Marsden's performance.
Dan Fogelman and Sterling K. Brown speak about Paradise
Fogelman sat down with Variety magazine following the premiere of the first season finale to reflect on the ending of the show. Commenting on the killer’s ultimate identity, he stated:
"We knew that who the killer was was going to be a big question on everyone’s minds. We wanted it to be satisfying, and we wanted it to be attached to the bigger picture of the bunker — how this thing was made, and the kind of upstairs and downstairs idea of who got chosen and who got left behind."
He further added:
"So we’d always kind of had in our mind’s eye that somebody has been lightly hiding there in plain sight the entire time. And the big breakthrough was when we decided not just that it would be the librarian, but that it was going to be the person who originally attempted to assassinate the president.”
Brown, on the other hand, teased what fans can expect from the upcoming season:
"Structurally, we’ll be introduced to people on the outside and then sort of flashback in their lives as well. If ‘Lost’ and ‘The Wire’ had a baby, it would be ‘Paradise.'”
Paradise is available exclusively on Hulu.
