Yes, you heard that right—Patrick Stewart had a deeply personal alternate pitch for the ending of Star Trek: Picard Season 3, but unfortunately, it was never filmed. In his 2023 memoir, Making It So, Stewart described the end arc of Jean-Luc Picard as “content and not anxious.”

“What I’d like to see at the end of the show is a content Jean-Luc. Not anxious, not in a frenzy, not depressed. And I think this means there is a wife in the picture.”

The writers also wrote the scene, but due to some time constraints, it was never shot and was later deemed “expensive” by the studio. Read on to know more about what exactly he said about the popular character.

Patrick Stewart, speaking in his 2023 memoir, added how he imagined the scene taking place at Picard’s vineyard at dusk. He stands with his dog at his side, facing away from the camera, and a woman’s voice is heard off-screen, gently calling him for supper.

"The writers came up with a lovely scene. It is dusk at Jean-Luc's vineyard. His back is to us as he takes in the view, his dog at his side. Then, off-screen, a woman's loving voice is heard: "Jean-Luc? Supper's ready!"

The identity of the woman was intentionally left ambiguous. Even with a precisely outlined treatment, the scene was never filmed.

This happened because, on the final day of shooting, time constraints didn’t allow Stewart to film the scene immediately. He expected to return later to shoot it, but the studio never followed up. He later learned it was deemed “too expensive” and “unnecessary” by the studio. As a result, the more ensemble-driven final scene—the TNG crew playing poker together—became the show’s official closing moment.

Though disappointed that his vineyard scene wasn’t included, Stewart accepted the decision with grace. He admitted that his ending would have provided a more fulfilling and warm conclusion to the character. However, he acknowledged that the poker scene honored the Next Generation legacy and the bonds between the crew. He agrees that the Star Trek: Picard Season 3 ending is a “warm, emotional send-off” to his “favourite Starfleet crew.”

While Star Trek: Picard gave Jean-Luc a satisfying send-off, Patrick Stewart is not fully ready to bid farewell to his iconic role. Eventually, he embraced the challenge of playing an older version of Picard. According to reports, the actor is also pushing for a standalone Picard movie, which would further explore his individual story emotionally. He has discussed the idea with Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, and LeVar Burton, who are all interested—Frakes being his preferred director.
