The Star Trek: Strange New Worlds franchise has never been afraid to take risks. From the musical episodes to the time travel narrative, the series has always walked a thin line between tradition and experimentation. One of its most anticipated upcoming episodes is a puppet episode in Season 4, a daring stylistic innovation that has generated significant buzz among fans ahead of its release

But one major name missing from this whimsical adventure is Paul Wesley. Prominent for his brief moment as the younger James T. Kirk, Wesley just confirmed that his character does not appear in the puppet episode, and he's not shy about discussing his ambivalence regarding it. According to TV Insider, he said,

"I'm not in that episode, unfortunately, so I can't speak to it. But I have seen some stuff, and it is just pure brilliance. I am jealous that I'm not in it, actually."

Puppet episode confirmed for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4

The long-awaited puppet episode is actually part of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 and has not yet aired. The episode was directed by Jordan Canning, previously having directed Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock, and will introduce the members of the USS Enterprise crew as puppets. The process was done through a collaboration with Jim Henson's Creature Shop, a master of innovative puppetry and character development.

From fan promotional teases at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 and pre-run press events, the episode is set to deliver a lighthearted and dreamlike atmosphere, one that is a departure from typical Star Trek storytelling but within the exploration framework for the franchise.

Paul Wesley talks regret, on a lighthearted note, about the puppet episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

In recent interviews with TV Insider, Paul Wesley did not hide his surprise at being left out of the puppet-themed episode. While there was no disagreement or in-production motivation behind his omission, Wesley did say,

"What I love about Strange New Worlds is that every single episode is its own movie. It’s an episodic series with serialized elements, but at the end of the day, you can actually tune in, and each episode is a completely different theme. It’s almost like everything is obviously a space adventure, but in a weird way, you’re exploring so many different genre"

Not the first genre-bending moment for the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The puppet episode is not the first creative divergence Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has experienced. The musical episode during Season 2, "Subspace Rhapsody," also had a similar divergence from the franchise's traditional tone in the inclusion of full-fledged musical numbers within the episode. But let's make a point here that the puppet episode and the musical episode are two drastically different episodes and belong to different seasons.

Though Wesley did show up in Season 2's musical episode, his non-appearance in the Season 4 puppet episode is merely a function of the character not being scripted into that episode; there were no production or scheduling issues at stake.

Wider trends in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4's narrative approach

Season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds seems to be diving headfirst into experimental formats. The franchise, which in the past was known for its philosophical challenges and alien politics, is now embracing genre-bending story aspects. Puppetry, musical theater, and other unconventional storytelling techniques are being included as means of reimagining the manner in which character development and science fiction themes are being presented on the screen.

This experimentation is not free of debate, however. Though most fans love the artistic departures, some are still split on just how far the series should deviate from its starting point. But Paul Wesley's response proves that even the actors are engaged and interested in such bold innovations.

What's next for Paul Wesley and Kirk?

Paul Wesley reprises his role as James T. Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but even more prominently during the remainder of the series. Although he was denied puppetry this time, there might even be stranger things to come in upcoming episodes. His work as a younger Kirk has laid the groundwork for much of the overall storylines of the show, and his character work will continue to become even more nuanced as the series continues on.

Meanwhile, however, Wesley is in the auditorium, along with the rest of us, to watch what becomes of the puppet episode on the air.
