Peacemaker Season 2 starts with a clever twist. The “Previously in the DCU” recap no longer shows the old Season 1 Justice League silhouettes. Instead, it features the new Justice Gang. James Gunn uses this to connect Peacemaker to his DC Universe reboot and reference the upcoming Superman film and its lineup of heroes.
Fans noticed the shadows (and quick lines) of Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner's Green Lantern, and Mister Terrific, plus the unmistakable silhouette of Superman and Supergirl in the recap. Gunn is not attempting to remake the past; he is merely ensuring the show is in line with where the DCU is heading, or, as he explained, that he had to make it fit in. However, it also leaves viewers with the question of whether or not Superman and Supergirl are official members of the team or if they are just making appearances. Gunn has answered this, and it is quite typical of DCU.
What James Gunn said

So, are Supergirl and Superman part of the Justice Gang in Peacemaker Season 2? No. James Gunn explained that they are not official members of the Justice Gang in the second season of Peacemaker. They are cordial allies who join forces with the Gang, just as we witnessed around the events of Superman. That resolves the recap ambiguity: the silhouettes are not full-time members, but one can think of them as frequent collaborators, rather than being on the payroll.
In an interview with Brandon Davis, when asked whether the actors of Supergirl and Superman actually acted for their cameos in Peacemaker Season 2, James Gunn clarified:
“No, I used plates…Nobody was in the shot. I used plates of everybody. So, I reshot, you know, we used plates from the first season. I shot Guy and Hawkgirl by themselves. So, it was just a bunch of magic.”
How Peacemaker Season 2 rewrites that Season 1 cameo

Peacemaker Season 1 closed with a much-talked-about Justice League gag, and Season 2 reworks it to replace it with the Justice Gang. The montage is filled with new ADR and shots to make it fit with the DCU as we currently know it, but there are several familiar faces: Superman, Supergirl, Mister Terrific, Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl, who play a role in Peacemaker’s journey. James Gunn told Brandon Davis about his take on shooting the recap scene:
“Well, I always knew that had to be the case. I always knew that the one thing that was really the hanging chad from Season 1 that doesn’t fit in with the DCU is Justice League….I had to do something about it, and I handled it in the most simple way I possibly could, that wasn’t too expensive.”
What this means for the DCU
Practically, the reset lets us know two things. One, the Justice Gang is the DCU-established super-group in the present day, a team that will likely remain constant despite changes in membership. Second, it allows Superman and Supergirl to look big without the constraints of a charter that leaves their solo stories nimble enough to go their own way without the threat of loss of team chemistry when required by the plot. Gunn has made it clear that Peacemaker Season 2 is firmly set within the DCU and that only minor adjustments had to be made to reconcile matters.
Peacemaker Season 2 debuted on August 21, 2025, on HBO Max and is scheduled to release new episodes every week on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.
