Why does Peacemaker try to join the DCU Justice Gang in Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 1?

Right after Peacemaker and Leota arrive at the place, Peacemaker mentions,

“I don’t want to be a joke anymore, Ads. This is all I’ve ever wanted, you know? To be a real hero.”

So the main reason why he wanted to try out for Justice Gang was to become a real hero. His insecurity prevents him from accepting the fact that he indeed is a hero. The idea of being a part of something big, like the Justice Gang, would give him the confidence boost.

He would finally be able to accept that he is a hero. He suffers a lot because of his past experiences. Joining the Justice Gang would be an ultimate form of recognition for him.

Though he went expecting to get recruited by the Justice Gang, things did not go quite well. Right when Peacemaker arrives inside the room in Peacemaker Season 2, he sees that Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Maxwell Lord are sitting inside a room separated by a glass partition.

He is told to tell them about their skills. However, due to a technical glitch, the microphone that they were using was broken, which caused Peacemaker to be able to hear them even when the microphone was turned off.

While Peacemaker was talking about his skills, the members of the Justice Gang and Maxwell Lord began to pass condescending comments about him without knowing that he was able to hear everything they said. They said "he murders people, “ "indecisive," “volatile tendencies," and many more. While Peacemaker was trying his best to impress them, they were shredding his self-esteem even more.

In the end, Peacemaker could not tolerate their condescending words, and he informed them that he was able to hear everything they said. It is also revealed that only Maxwell did not know that the microphone was broken. Green Lantern set the whole thing up as a joke. Peacemaker comes out of the interview brimming with anger and tells Leota,

“I don’t want to be in their lame group anyway.”

After getting humiliated and demoralized by the Justice Gang, his desire to join the group reduced. Their rejection completely shatters him. This powerful scene in Peacemaker Season 2 starts a new character arc for Chris. It also reinforces his feelings of being an outcast.

What the future holds for him will be unfolded in the upcoming episodes of the series. Whether he will be a part of the Justice Gang or create his own path to self-discovery is yet to be unfolded.
