Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 just premiered on Disney+ on December 10, 2025 with the first two episodes. The highlights of these episodes includes Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson realising where Grover is being kept captive, the Half-Blood camp getting attacked and Poseidon claiming Tyson. While all of this was unfolding, viewers might have noticed tension between Annabeth and Percy. They are good friends and long-time fans of the novels would know that this friendship would eventually develop into a romantic relationship. But as of the last moments of Season 1, Percy and Annabeth were good friends, who have reunited at camp half-blood after spending the school year seperate. While Annabeth's tension with Percy might stem from the fact that she doesn't like Tyson since he's a cyclops, there's more to this tension. Dan Shotz, executive producer of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, shared more on the reason behind this tension in an interview with Variety.Dan Shotz on tension between Annabeth and Percy in Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2At the end of Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 1, Percy and Annabeth parted ways, promising to reunite at camp half-blood after a year. However, when they do reunite in Season 2, their dynamic isn't as smooth as you'd expect it to be. That can be due to a range of reasons like Annabeth not being a fan of Percy's half-brother Tyson, and the friends being separated for a year. Dan Shotz, one of the executive producers of the show, shed more light on the characters' tension in an interview with Variety. She has never been out in the real world in the last five years, and this experience has really been challenging for her, and it’s really hard to talk about. As they’re trying to reconnect after a year, all those bonds are shifting. The connection she was hoping to have with her father out in the real world wasn’t quite what Percy promised."Annabeth wasn't too close with her father, having to leave him and his new family after she felt neglected and unwanted. Her mother Athena doesn't really have a close relationship with her yet, and thus when after five years Annabeth does go back to the real world to have a relationship with her father, it doesn't go well. Besides, she has spent five years training and learning the ways of a different kind of world, and thus the transition to the mortal world has been difficult for her. Besides, been a year since she has seen Percy, and they both have had substantial growth in the time betweem. Shotz also said,"Now, coming back together, they’re really in different places, and they have to find a new way of working together and being partners of the story. Because as you’re going to see for the whole season, this is really the Percy-Annabeth story. They’re together in this journey and have a pretty amazing arc as they face all of these trials at the Sea of Monsters.
