As we approach the end of the year, Lanterns is shaping up to be one of the most exciting DC projects. An adaptation of the Green Lantern comics, the HBO series is headlined by two of the most fan-favorite human Green Lantern Corps members: Hal Jordan and John Stewart. However, we have to wait for a while before the superhero series releases next year.
The series was initially scheduled to release in early 2026, but rumors of a delay have been circulating on the internet for a while; however, it wasn't confirmed until last month. And now, thanks to Peter Safran, we have a release window for Lanterns: late summer 2026.
"It was about when it made sense for it to be released, so (HBO Max) could get the right lead in, the right promotion. Because it's an important show for everybody, and the show is going to be great. It was about the right timing, so it's going to be… it's late summer. But there's a reason for it."
Lanterns delay explained:
James Gunn and Peter Safran confirmed an early 2026 release during the press conference this February. Chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content, Casey Bloys, confirmed the delay only last month. This contradicted WBD CEO David Zaslav's letter to the shareholders in early November:
"Importantly, with its first theatrical release Superman, DC Studios marked a new era and critical first step on its 10-year journey to deliver fans a fresh and cohesive storyline across film and television, while bringing new heroes and villains to the surface. Building on Superman’s foundation, upcoming DC Studios projects include Lanterns, which will debut on HBO Max in early 2026; Supergirl and Clayface, which are scheduled for theatrical release in summer and fall 2026, respectively; and Man of Tomorrow, the follow-up to Superman, which James Gunn is currently writing and will again direct. We remain incredibly excited about the momentum at DC Studios and its prospects to re-connect with fans and ignite the next generation of these beloved characters."
However, it seems that the DC HBO series has been delayed for strategic reasons. This delay may help DC Studios to market the superhero series in the latter half of the coming year. Many believe that it will air on HBO around the same time that Peacemaker Season 2 streamed on HBO Max this year.
What is its place in the DCU timeline?
The DCU timeline for now consists of three projects: Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker Season 2. Now, the coming year consists of three more projects, two movies, and one series: Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface. Of these, Clayface will be the last DCU project next year.
"The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland."
The Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre DCU HBO series will release sometime in the second half of next year. A second adaptation of the Green Lantern comics, the HBO show has been hyped up as a True Detective-inspired series.
