Pluribus wasted no time getting everyone hooked. Two episodes in and people are already debating what the show is really about. And honestly, no one has a solid answer yet. But isn't that part of the fun? The mystery has viewers buzzing. And the show’s already been renewed for Season 2. It’s a Vince Gilligan show so it's not going to be simple. His shows flip everything just when you think you’ve figured it out and leaves you questioning what you just watched.

This Apple TV series introduces us to Carol Sturka. She is a novelist who somehow stays immune to the sudden take over of the "happy" virus. The world seems to have a connected mind now. Except the 12 immune people, including her. Carol is sarcastic and absolutely hates her most popular book. After the sudden death of her partner, she becomes even more lonely as strange things happen around her.

It seems like Pluribus plays with the idea of good and evil. Carol seems like the unlikely hero because she’s fighting against something that's unnatural. But is she really a hero? Because she kills people every time she reacts negatively and loses her temper. The hive mind cannot take in her negative emotions. It affects them physically. They shake and fall to the ground. Some even die. Her emotions are basically weapons. You can’t help but wonder if her resistance is saving humanity or slowly destroying it.

Pluribus: The line between saving and destroying

Pluribus doesn’t give you clear answers in the first two episodes. It shows a world where everyone is connected through a shared consciousness. Nobody feels pain or fear anymore. Sounds peaceful, right? But the show makes you question if peace without choice is really peace.

Carol and 11 others can’t join the hive because they’re immune. But the others see the virus as a gift and feel sad about being left out. Carol feels the opposite as she sees their immunity as the only real freedom left. She’s left wandering through empty cities and watching people smile with the same blank expression. It’s eerie and you can feel her frustration when she realizes that her anger can literally kill.

Pluribus digs deeper into that conflict in episode two. Carol learns how the hive mind works. They do not kill. Not even an ant. If they do it mistakenly, they mourn. They are also sensitive to harsh words. All of this makes them void of the very thing that makes one a human. They do not possess complex emotions. All they talk about is peace and happiness.

And this infuriates Carol because she sees how the 'infected' people have lost their humanity. They have lost their uniqueness and freedom. But some think joining the hive could end the suffering once and for all. Carol believes resisting is the only way to stay alive in the real sense.

Carol wants the other 11 to see things the way she does in Pluribus. She gathers them together and tells them they need to save the world. They need to bring humanity back to what it used to be. They’ve lost what makes them human. She understands why the others feel differently. But Carol wants them to realize that joining the hive isn’t a win, but actually a loss.

Still, the show hasn’t told us if the hive mind is actually good or bad. And Pluribus has already been renewed for Season 2 with Vince Gilligan hinting it could run for even more. So, it feels like this mystery will take its sweet time to unfold. We probably won’t get all the answers this season about whether the “happy virus” is a blessing or a curse. Or if Carol is really a hero, an antagonist, or something in between.

For now, all we know is that she’s trying to restore what makes people human. And that feels like the right thing to do. At least for now, Carol seems to be on the right side of the fight. Though with a Gilligan story, who knows how long that will last.
