The plot of Pluribus

The show revolves around Carol Sturka, a historical romance author, who is seemingly immune to a weird virus that has affected everyone around her. The virus has made people optimistic and content, while Carol is the only one who still feels other emotions.

The narrative takes place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the same city where Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul were also set. The official logline of the series reads:

“The most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness.”

Vince Gilligan talked about why Carol is immune to the virus in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. The showrunner revealed that he did not think of an answer, as there could always be a one-in-a-billion person who remains immune to things around them. He said:

“[It] never really occurred to me as a question. I just figured there's always gotta be a one-in-a-billion person. And it's Carol. As to the science of it, I don't know. Maybe we'll have an answer, maybe we won’t.”
