Meaning of the show's title and why Vince Gilligan chose to use Pluribus

The meaning of the word Pluribus is ‘many’. It comes from a Latin phrase, “E pluribus unum”, which means ‘Out of many, one’. In this series, the word ‘many’ is crucial in carrying the meaning of the series. According to Vince Gilligan, the show is “not intended” to represent “just American” but so much more.

The “idea of out of many, one” became an integral driving factor in determining the name of the series. The word Pluribus perfectly captures the situation of Carol, the character around whom the story of the series revolves. The series focuses on Carol Sturka and her desire to bring back the world to its original state.

Currently, the world around her is not the same. All the people around her are affected by a happy virus, which is causing them to become extremely content with any situation that they are in. However, Carol is the only person who understands the problem in this situation. Right in the trailer of the series, we see how frantic Carol becomes in trying to bring the situation back to how things were. The premise is truly nothing that we have seen before.

To bring out the essence of the series, creator Vince Gilligan went through quite a lot of trouble to find the correct name that would be able to represent the series. The idea for this series came to him when he started the filming process of Better Call Saul. For a decade, he kept the idea of the series but could not find a fitting name.

The naming process for this series was quite hectic, according to Vince Gilligan. He notes that he, along with the writer of the series, would come forward with a hundred names. Out of these hundred names, the screening process would start. The title Pluribus came forward quite early, while the discussion about the title was going on.

However, they decided not to move forward with it, thinking “it's gotta be something else”. After almost “about 2 years,” they circled back to the title of Pluribus and finally went with it. It cannot be denied that with the type of storyline that this series comes with, this title is perfectly fitting.

The series will be dropping on November 7. The first two episodes of the series will drop on the very first day. The third episode of the series will arrive a week later on November 14. Apple TV will be streaming the series, so you can watch it at your own convenience. Vince Gilligan, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, describes the series as the story focusing on “the world’s most miserable person” whose goal is to “save the planet from happiness”.

Humor and drama will be a crucial focus of the series. He also adds that Carol Sturka is the “reluctant hero” in the story. She does not want to be “tasked with saving the world”. However, she cannot completely overlook it, as she considers that “it's her duty.”
