Pluribus finds scientists discovering a virus that manages to affect the entire world and turn them into a hivemind, which is always concerned about immune Carol's health and well-being. The problem then lies in the chilling process of transformation.

The first episode of the show features this transformation process, or the "Joining," and while this is an apocalypse, the whole thing has been turned on its head by the genius of Vince Gilligan. We are also introduced to one of the most shocking scenarios as Carol's partner and manager, Helen, meets a tragic end owing to the injuries she sustains during the transformation process.

While the first episode of Pluribus wastes no time in setting the stage for the apocalypse that will take over the world, it is completely unexpected that the chilling transformation would also occur in the first episode itself. The outbreak starts after Carol and Helen step outside, and as Helen looks up at the sky, she freezes.

Owing to the fact that Helen was looking up at the sky at the moment the transformation process started, she fell back on her head and ended up hitting her head. Carol rushes to try and save her partner, but unable to prevent her fall, she tries to rush her to the hospital. Carol's tumultuous journey to the hospital reveals just how devastating the effects of the transformation process have been for the planet.

However, just as Carol tries to get Helen onto a stretcher and into the hospital, Helen passes away in the hospital parking lot itself. Her death appears to be the result of internal injuries owing to the fall she took during the transformation process.

Helen's death is integral to Carol's resistance to the virus itself in Pluribus, as she has firsthand witnessed the horror of the transformation. Additionally, Carol becoming a part of the hive mind ahead of her death led to the hive mind knowing Carol and all of Helen's memories of her, further hindering Helen's grieving process for Carol.

Helen's memories in the hivemind also continue to play an important role in the narrative as Carol can access them and get honest answers, which even Helen wouldn't have revealed. This aspect of the hivemind continues to haunt Carol and severely guide her actions on Pluribus.
