Times are good for fans of Poker Face as the Natasha Lyonne starrer is finally back with its second season after a wait of almost two years. The official synopsis for Poker Face is as follows:

“A mystery-of-the-week series following Charlie Cale, who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road in her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can't help but solve. Guest stars are plentiful throughout, from Ellen Barkin and Adrien Brody to Luis Guzmán and Chloë Sevigny.”

It further adds:

“An inverted detective series, also known as a "howcatchem" and popularized by "Columbo," the crime and perpetrator are shown at the beginning of each episode, and follows Charlie as she tries to solve the mystery.”

While Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie Cale followed different mysteries every week, a steady storyline was maintained throughout season 1, and the cliffhanger that the plot ended on will dictate the events that will unfold in Poker Face Season 2.

Let us now have a quick recap of what happened in Poker Face Season 1.

The following article contains spoilers.

Charlie hits the road in Poker Face Season 1 to escape Sterling Sr

The highlight of the character of Charlie Cale is that she is a living lie detector. Poke Face never makes it clear how or when she got this ability, but she can always tell when someone is lying, and that gives her a particularly beneficial edge at card games.

While this skill of hers got her banned from the casino, she gets entangled in a dangerous situation as her friend gets killed on Sterling’s orders, as she had uncovered the fact that the client they were dealing with was into child p*rn.

Charlie eventually figured out who killed her friend, but could not report Sterling to the police as the law enforcement was sold to them. She taped Sterling Jr talking about how he planned to cheat the aforementioned client, and then sent the tape to the client.

While Charlie’s plan of exposing Sterling Jr was going pretty smoothly, what she did not expect was that he would jump from the hotel balcony and kill himself. This suicide puts Charlie under the wrath of Sterling Sr, who vows to find her, which eventually makes her hit the road.

Sterling Sr lets Charlie go in Season 1 finale

The finale of Poker Face Season 1 turned out to be a shocker. After getting hold of Charlie after almost a year of Cliff running behind her throughout the country, Sterling Sr decided to let her go. He told her that he had learned that his son was associated with his longtime rival and mob boss, Beatrix Hasp, and therefore, he no longer cared about his death and also did not hold Charlie responsible for it.

This decision, however, did not sit well with Cliff as he had to put a lot of effort into getting hold of Charlie. Thus, he devised a different plot as he contacted Hasp for killing Sterling Sr and framing Charlie for the murder. However, this plan did not work out as Charlie successfully got Cliff arrested for the murder of her friend.

Despite escaping the clutches of Sterling Sr and Cliff, Charlie could not really find her freedom. She got a call from Hasp, who asked her to work with her or die. Charlie again chose to hit the road, which meant that by the time season 1 ended, she started running from Hasp.

Poker Face can be streamed on Peacock.
