Showrunner Akiva Goldsman recently revealed that a Star Trek: Strange New Worlds spin-off is still in his dreams, and it may be facing delays with the network's other plans about the sci-fi universe.

Goldsman has been one of the people crucial in shaping this chapter of this saga, which has finally concluded its third season. Through this project, he introduced another set of stories from its ensuing prime timeline, serving as a prequel to The Original Series. It has introduced newer details about its previously established characters, including Kirk and Spock.

It allowed Goldsman to think about its creative future with a spin-off project, dubbed Star Trek: Year One. However, his recent comments offer a disappointing update about its production schedule, let alone its status as a future project. The producer spoke about it during a recent chat with ScreenRant. While referring to the spin-off, he said,

"So it is a dream, and it's a real dream. We would be thrilled to do it, but it's not up to us, right? We're renting. I mean, this isn't our house, and so, it's delightful to have the chance to live here and to redecorate, but the house has new owners."

Goldsmen then elaborated on what the team is currently working on in connection with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. That's where he also spoke about the show's forthcoming fifth season.

The Star Trek: Strange New Worlds spin-off from Akiva Goldsman may take a long time to see the light of day, but the producer knows what he wants it to represent in connection with the fifth season. He told Screenrant,

"So what we're doing is, if the show is a dream, season five is the promise we made, which we're finishing."

Goldsman also explained how the finale of Strange New Worlds can serve as a profoundly emotional note in this narrative, offering a hope for stories like the spin-off idea behind Year One.

"We're ending Strange New Worlds in a way that is emotional and important and fulfills the promise that we made to the audience and ourselves, and is complete. And then, if somebody comes back and says, hey, yeah, we'd love to [make Star Trek: Year One], no one will be quicker there to the room than Henry and I. But in advance of that, what we're doing is finishing [Strange New Worlds]."

With Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the showrunners set a more comprehensive account for Kirk and Spock's mutual journey. So, it might be a thread that the studio will consider developing in the near future.

At the moment, the future of the spin-off project remains uncertain, since it hasn't been greenlit as of yet, according to ScreenRant. Earlier, it was believed to be a far more viable prospect, but with the recent changes in the company's administration, it's unclear whether it would arrive on screens or not. Until then, fans can watch Strange New Worlds on Paramount+.
