As Stranger Things heads towards its long-awaited finale, the cast behind Netflix’s era-defining sci-fi drama took a moment to look back at the scenes that meant the most to them. After nearly a decade of battling Demogorgons and navigating the Upside Down, the actors who brought Hawkins to life reflected on the moments that left a lasting impact on them as performers.
MTV Asia reeled in Stranger Things stars Joe Keery (Steve Harrington), Natalia Dyer (Nancy Wheeler) & Charlie Heaton (Jonathan Byers) for a fun segment to celebrate the release of the fifth and final season of their Global hit.
When asked about their favorite scenes from the show, Keery was quick to notice how Dyer's scenes from the second episode of the final season were 'pretty good'. While Dyer was careful not to spill the beans on the final season, Keery reflected on an iconic Steve scene, with none other than the new arrogant jock, Billy Hargrove, from Season 2.
Here is all about it.
Stranger Things stars reveal their favorite scenes from the series
In between bike rides and multiple refills of Eggo, the Stranger Things cast has revealed their all-time favorite scenes from the Duffer Brothers' sci-fi saga. While Dyer was naturally tight-lipped about one of her favorite scenes from the upcoming episodes, Joe Keery did not hold back. The Steve Harrington actor reflected on a fond memory from Season 2, when he filmed an intense basketball scene with actor Dacre Montgomery, who played Billy, Max's brother in Seasons 2 and 3.
Revealing behind-the-scenes details about Steve and Billy's intense basketball match on the school's court, Keery reminisces about how they took basketball lessons after filming and Montgomery showed his impressive 'moves' in front of the camera:
''Also getting absolutely dunked on by Dacre on the set [laughter]. Like remember we did these basketball lessons and he would always be doing all these like fancy moves, and like no offense to Dacre, it would be like airballs. We're learning how to play. And then the one day that we're shooting he does this I don't know if he was like holding out or something. He does this crazy move on camera one time like under the legs, crazy shot and gets it in first try and it makes it into the show.''
Keery was naturally taken aback by Montgomery's basketball techniques in Stranger Things as he revealed further:
''I was like how did you learn to do [laughter] that? Like we're taking lessons together and you were not that good.''
It's interesting how, like Steve, Billy also underwent a positive character change and sacrificed himself in front of the Mind Flayer to save Eleven. While Billy was shockingly taken under control by the monster in Stranger Things Season 3, he managed to free himself at the last moment, but died in the process.
Keery's comments brought back fond memories of Billy and Steve's iconic basketball match from Stranger Things Season 2 Episode 3. Steve, who has enjoyed the status of the most popular and handsome boy at school, was essentially threatened by Billy's arrival. Their silent rivalry came to an intense head when the arrogant new jock dominated the court against King Steve during gym class, much to the amusement of his other friends.
In addition to Dyer, Keery and Heaton, Stranger Things Season 5 Part 2 marks the return of Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Finn Wolfhard, Sadie Sink and Maya Hawke. The next installment (Episodes 5-7) will arrive on Netflix on Christmas Day, December 25 at 5 p.m. PT, setting the stage for an explosive finale scheduled to release on December 31.
