Pretty Little Liars explored some jaw-dropping mysteries and shockers. However, some twists were so surprising that they left viewers puzzled for years after the show ended. From an unexpected secret twin sister showing up to the main characters' mothers getting locked in a basement, it was one head-scratcher after another.

1. CeCe Drake is 'A' (Season 6, Episode 10 - Game Over, Charles)

Pretty Little Liars' biggest twist was CeCe Drake's real identity. The creators revealed that she was actually Charles DiLaurentis, who had become Charlotte and acted as 'A'. But many fans noticed problems with this theory.

The show did not clearly explain how Charlotte watched the girls for so many years, executed every plan, or got so much money. Due to these gaps, the twist felt weak and lacked coherence for many viewers.

2. Sara Harvey was a Red Coat and Black Widow (Season 6, Episode 10 - Game Over, Charles)

This twist was probably the most disappointing for the audience, as the show revealed Sara Harvey as both Red Coat and Black Widow. Many people did not like this twist. Sara helped Charlotte, even though she was once a victim in the dollhouse.

This sudden change confused viewers of Pretty Little Liars, as they saw her suddenly helping her own captor, Charlotte. Many fans expressed disappointment and uncertainty about the direction of the story.

3. Alison's mother buried her alive (Season 4, Episode 24 - A is for Answers)

In a very tragic scene, Jessica DiLaurentis sees Charlotte hit her daughter Alison in the head. Then, thinking that Alison was dead, she buries her alive to save Charlotte.

How a mother could do such a terrible thing without checking her child's pulse is beyond imagination. This Pretty Little Liars scene was an incredible and unrealistic twist in the story.

4. Spencer's twin sister, Alex Drake (A.D.) (Season 7, Episode 20 - Till Death Do Us Part)

In the previous episode, the producers revealed that A.D. is Spencer Hastings’ secret British twin, Alex Drake. Before this Pretty Little Liars episode, no one even had a hint about that. And then, suddenly, a girl named Alex comes along and starts trying to steal Spencer’s friends, family, and identity as well!

The concept of the twin was maybe too sensational, but viewers said that the ending seemed like a soap opera.

5. Ezra Fitz's Book Writing Conspiracy (Season 4, Episode 20 - Free Fall)

Ezra was spying on Aria and her friends so he could write a true-crime book. This decision brings up a lot of questions about his character. It also makes his relationship with Aria very uncomfortable to watch.

After this reveal, many viewers see him in a different light. However, the Pretty Little Liars creators easily forgive Ezra, and the characters quickly accept him, which is unrealistic.

6. Mothers Trapped in the Basement (Season 6, Episode 9 - Last Dance)

Another example is when the liars’ mothers, including Ashley, Veronica, Pam, and Ella, are being locked in the DiLaurentis family's basement. There is no explanation in the show of how they were locked in there and how they were let out.

This scene is absolutely irrelevant to the main story. And the viewer never gets to know what happens next in Pretty Little Liars.

7. Marion Cavanaugh's real cause of death (Season 6, Episode 10 - Game Over, Charles)

The story of Toby's mother, Marion Cavanaugh's death, has changed repeatedly. At first, it was said that she committed suicide by jumping from the Radley Sanitarium due to depression. Later, the producers of Pretty Little Liars said that Bethany Young pushed her off the roof.

Again, Charlotte's involvement was also hinted at. Changing the story that many times about the cause of a character's death confused the audience and made the main story more complicated.

8. Toby Cavanaugh Joins the A-Team (Season 3, Episode 12 - The Lady Killer)

Moreover, later, Toby showed up as a member of the A-Team wearing a black hoodie. The fact was a massive surprise for the audience. Then, he said he did it to shield Spencer from the other side.

However, most of his activities have been harming Spencer and her friends. While his intentions are honest, his actions do not support that purpose. This appears to be a weak point for the audience.

9. Wren Kingston's true motives (Season 7, Episode 20 - Till Death Do Us Part)

Wren Kingston was a questionable character from the beginning. But at the end of the story, it is revealed that he was Alex Drake's accomplice. He was helping her in all these terrible deeds out of love.

Alex even took his life. It was very disappointing for the audience that an intelligent and established doctor had such weak motives!

10. The supernatural "Ravenswood" World (Season 4, Episode 13 - Grave New World)

Pretty Little Liars introduced a spin-off series titled Ravenswood during its fourth season. The new show introduced ghosts and supernatural curses. This strange transformation introduced ghost stories to a mystery-thriller.

As a result, many fans never really connected with the stories themselves, and the spin-off was swiftly canceled.

More twists that left viewers shocked

The show had several other plot twists that didn't make sense. For example, Shana, an ordinary girl, suddenly became an antagonist just because she wanted revenge on Jenna.

Additionally, the writers developed Bethany Young as a mysterious character. Yet, her story stayed unclear to viewers. Noel Kahn's death was another dramatic move. He was beheaded with an axe, which seemed too extreme for the story. Deaths in Rosewood were not taken seriously either.

Pretty Little Liars was not just another teen drama. It kept people interested season after season. Each new season brought more twists, surprises, and answers. Viewers kept asking what would happen next. Some plot twists did not make much sense, but that actually made the show even more interesting.
