"Pride, ambition": Harry Potter icon Tom Felton talks about the good attributes of a Slytherin on The Tonight Show 

In a recent episode of The Tonight Show, Tom Felton, known as Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter series, had a heartwarming conversation with Jimmy Fallon while deciding which house Fallon could likely belong to.

The actor, who is once again stepping into the shoes of Draco for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (Broadway production), mentioned that he has recently moved to New York and is extremely excited to stay a few months in the bustling city.

Tom also shared insights on his new role as he looks forward to stepping back into the Slytherin robes. Harry Potter fans know Slytherin House for producing some of the most ambitious and resourceful wizards (including the one who shall not be named).

On The Tonight Show, Felton did not describe Slytherin House’s attributes as mischievous or evil, but spoke on the matter with great fondness. His words revealed how deeply he connects with the role of Draco Malfoy, a key character in the Potter universe. Felton said,

“Well, pride, ambition. Uh, and I like Slytherin because there’s a bit of room for mischievousness. It means that you have good intentions, but you might do something awry if it comes up and rears its head.”

Felton’s take on Slytherin draws a more thoughtful take on the house, founded by one of Hogwarts’ most legendary wizards. Slytherin housed characters like Severus Snape and even Draco himself, who proved that ambition can coexist with loyalty and courage.

Other than talking about the admirable qualities of Slytherin, the actor also discussed playing Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. When the host of The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon, asked about Draco's role in the new rendition, Felton stated that Draco is now a father, which means audiences can hope to see a different, more balanced portrayal of the character. Felton explained,

"He's breaking the lineage of Lucius's parentage towards Draco 'cause Lucius was not a great dad, in case you don't know. And, uh, he's trying to be slightly more, um, affectionate towards his son, Scorpius."

The earlier Harry Potter movies shed light on Malfoy and the relationship he shared with his dad. Throughout the Harry Potter films, their relationship was strained and tense, as Malfoy was assigned a critical task to gain Lord Voldemort’s favor.

On the The Tonight Show, Felton maintained that he felt extremely happy returning to the Broadway stage as Draco after 25 years. However, he mentioned that he was initially

"a little rusty with the wand"

But his skills have returned now that he is holding a wand again. He praised the practical magic effects and said that he did not want to learn how the magical effects and tricks worked on stage. He wanted the secret to remain undisclosed to him so that he could keep believing in magic.

Overall, Felton’s statements reflected his deep love and admiration for the character of Draco Malfoy, a character he started portraying nearly two decades ago. His comments highlight how Draco is not an outright antagonist but a nuanced figure.
