The Wizard of Oz, the 1939 film, became a success when it was first released and has been a classic ever since. It was based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel of the same name.

As Deadline reports, Gina Matthews is developing a modern retelling of the novel Dorothy for Prime Video. Executive producers for the show include Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton, Lee Metzger, Grant Scharbo, and Patrick Moran.

The series will have a lot of music woven into the storytelling. Matthews is producing the show under her company, Little Engine. The modern retelling will be using the yellow brick road as a metaphor in the show for the struggles faced by young adults in the modern day.

According to Deadline, Matthews spoke about the upcoming show, saying,

"I’ve been in love with The Wizard of Oz books since I was a child,”

She continued,

“The story reminds us of the qualities we need to get through hard times, and Dorothy is a symbol of strength who shows us that with a little kindness — and a lot of grit — we can not only achieve great things but also lift up those around us. I’m excited to bring that message to the world, now more than ever.”

Gina Matthews is known for producing 13 Going on 30, Isn't It Romantic, and What Women Want. Blake Shelton, the singer and songwriter known for his albums Fully Loaded: God's Country and The Dreamer, is also an executive producer on the show. He is married to Gwen Stefani, who is another executive producer on The Wizard of Oz show.

As Deadline reports, Shelton spoke about the show, saying,

"We’re really excited about all the possibilities this show brings, and I’m so grateful that Gina shared the idea with me and Lee,”

Shelton continued,

“I knew right away it was something Gwen would connect with. Her creativity and perspective are such a natural fit for this project.”

Gwen Stefani, singer-songwriter and fashion designer, is known for, Love. Angel. Music. Baby. and You Make It Feel Like Christmas said,

"It’s a creative and modern take on a classic, and being part of something that blends music, emotion, and the character of Dorothy is inspiring to me,”

The story of The Wizard of Oz has been a classic for decades, and a retelling of it with a modern take might add a nice flair to it. While many are not fans of classics getting a modern retelling, the talented professionals behind the show might just prove that a retelling can be a success as well.

Deadline also reported what Patrick Moran said about the upcoming show. Be said,

"I’m really excited to work with this creative team,”

He continued,

“I’m such a fan of everyone involved and couldn’t ask for a more exciting partnership as we reinvent this cherished IP.”
