According to announcements from Cartoon Network and Warner Bros., the Peabody award-winning series Steven Universe is getting a sequel, which is in production at the moment. According to the announcement:

Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars explores the past, present and future of the Steven Universe universe. The sequel series follows Lars Barriga, eternal teenager and space outlaw, as he and his pirate crew smuggle contraband, evade the authorities, and uncover the darkest secrets of the fallen Gem Empire.

Rebecca Sugar, creator of Steven Universe, will be coming back to the new sequel project, Steven Universe: Lars to Stars, as an executive producer, along with Ian Jones-Quartey, writer and executive producer for Steven Universe, as well as the creator of OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes.

Sugar revealed this exciting announcement after she played an original she had written for the show, titled Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake. She talked about her affinity for the franchise during the sequel announcement at Annecy:

“I miss my world and my characters, I can’t wait to share [the sequel] with you and can’t thank you enough for all your support.”

In conversation with The Wrap, Sugar also revealed how excited she is to create this sequel cartoon with her significant other, Ian Jones-Quartey:

"Those characters and that world are really, really important to me. It’s something that I really hope to do. I’m thrilled. The biggest part to me is that I’m co-creating it with Ian Jones-Quartey and we developed the original ‘Steven Universe’ together at the very beginning. And now we’re back together again, developing this. And that’s all I want to do, is make cartoons with him."

The original show, a Bildungsroman (coming-of-age story) of a young boy and his friends, some of whom are also aliens, set in Beach City, was immensely popular on Cartoon Network and ran for 160 episodes over its five seasons from 2013 to 2019.

It even inspired a sequel television movie in 2019 titled Steven Universe: The Movie. This was followed by a limited series titled Steven Universe Future, which was released in 2019 and 2020. So, it has been 5 years since the last addition to the Steven Universe franchise. However, the new version, i.e., the sequel Steven Universe: Lars to Stars, will not air on Cartoon Network and will instead stream on Prime Video if it is greenlit.

It was also announced in this update that Cartoon Network is also renewing Teen Titans Go!, an animated series set in the DC universe, for its 10th season.
