Pro Bono Season 1 aired its first episode on December 6 this year, and legal drama fans are hooked already. I mean, why not? The series features a sharp-witted judge, Kang Da-wit (played by Jung Kyung-ho). However, he's not your usual protagonist with a heart of gold. In fact, his character is flawed. He is seen as arrogant and money-minded. But he meets with an unforeseen turn of events that forces him to resign.

With no choice left, he starts working as a public interest lawyer for a non-profit organization. That's no less than a nightmare for someone as materialistic as Da-wit. He even finds a partner, Park Gi-ppeum (played by So Joo-yeon). But she is dedicated to human rights. Together, they contribute to a greater cause.

Pro Bono episode 5 was released on December 20, and it is one of the most interesting ones so far.

Kaya's case

In this 1-hour-long episode, an immigrant woman residing in South Korea reaches out to Pro Bono, the non-profit organization Da-wit and Park Gi-ppeum works for. She is here to file a divorce lawsuit, but it turns out that there are way more underlying layers. This isn't merely a case of a woman seeking riddance from domestic disputes.

The case is first brought to Da-wit, but he soon refuses to take it up. The reason is that in South Korea, as an immigrant, the mutual divorce would make her leave the country. He sees Kaya with an eye of suspicion and assumes she must have a hidden agenda behind the petition.

Nonetheless, the protagonists look deeper into the case and make some shocking discoveries.

The darker story

In this Pro Bono episode, they visited her village and inquired the locals about Kaya and her husband. But none of the responses align with the others. While some defend Kaya, some vilify her. The investigating team is thus left confused, but soon discovered traces of domestic violence.

This is when Da-wit is curious, and he's ready to take up the case. They find out that her husband had anger issues and had tried strangling her after he heard rumors about her. But that wasn't the only abuse she was subjected to in the household. She was sexually assaulted by her father-in-law.

Things get out of hand when the family finds out that they are being investigated. As a suspect's first reaction, they end up denying. The husband admits to pushing her, but not an attempt to kill. Also, the mother-in-law claims that Kaya tried to get an abortion to escape the marriage.

The investigation continues, and they don't end up with a conclusion. Things get even more confusing. But the truth is eventually revealed, and all characters are left conflicted.

The most interesting thing about this episode is that Da-wit is slowly being perceived in a different light.

People around have slowly started to discover a kind soul, under the arrogance. Da-wit also confronts Park Gi-ppeum about his past scandal. Their interpersonal dynamics are at stake.

Nonetheless, Pro Bono episode 5 dealt with an intense yet layered case, drawing the legal drama fan's attention once again.
