In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, The Office creator Greg Daniels teases Oscar Nunez's return in the upcoming spin-off, The Paper. He emphasised how genuine Nunez's return is in the spin-off. This is because his character has more to explore, and The Paper would be the best place. Daniels said:

"One of the things that appealed to us was that Oscar had some untold stories left in him... It's wonderful to have him there, and he provides a linkage... your expectation is not that he's going to drive every story."

Greg Daniels made it clear that the character might not be a prominent part of the narrative, driving the story, but must provide a "linkage."

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Greg Daniels made it clear that The Paper is meant to stand on its own as a unique series, and he wants it to "live on its own. Or die on its own." He said:

"We're letting the show live on its own. Or die on its own. But you never know."

He acknowledged that Oscar Martínez, played by Oscar Núñez, is the most natural choice to return in the spin-off, connecting it with the original series, also adding more layers to the character's arc. The character hadn’t undergone massive changes like Michael, Dwight, or Angela in The Office; therefore, the spin-off might offer that space to explore him more. Daniels continued:

"As a character, he hadn't really had an enormous change. He's pretty much the same person. A lot of the other characters had massive change: Michael got married and moved to Colorado, Dwight and Angela turned into different people."

Greg Daniels emphasized that there is no plan to bring other characters back, other than Oscar, as of now.

Oscar will be offering The Office easter egg indeed. As per EW, in one of the scenes, he is seen telling Ned that his perception of seeing work as "fun" reminds him of his old boss. Nuñez even reinforces his return, saying:

“You cannot have a worse, more complicated boss than Michael Scott. Well, maybe you can.”

Oscar's character is an accountant at Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch. He is known for being one of the most competent and exasperated employees in the office. He is portrayed as intelligent and rational, often being the voice of reason amidst the office chaos.

In season 3, Oscar is revealed to be gay, which is supported by his boss, Michael, but his s*xuality has been occasionally a source of jokes from coworkers. He has complicated relationships in the office, sometimes clashing with Angela over moral issues, and at one point secretly having an affair with Angela’s husband, Senator Robert Lipton.

The Paper is dropping on September 4, 2025, with all 10 episodes dropping at once.
