Netflix's latest psychological thriller, The Beast in Me, premiered on November 13, 2025, and quickly became one of the top shows on the streaming platform. The series follows the story of Aggie Wiggs, played by Claire Danes, who, while writing the biography of her new neighbor, Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys), entangles herself in his dark past.

Rhys's character, Nile, is often described as "creepy" and "sinister," and is suspected of killing his first wife. During Deadline's Take Ten interview, Rhys revealed the green flags and also his feelings toward landing the role of Nile Jarvis. He shared that it was just a simple conversation with the producers after which he was told about getting the role, which he found more sinister. He stated:

"I had a conversation with them, and then they said, ‘You’ve got the part.’ Now, in that conversation, to my knowledge, I wasn’t being in any way creepy, however they saw something in their eyes that qualified me as creepy, which I find far more sinister and creepy."

More on this in our story.

The Beast in Me: Matthew Rhys talks about landing the role of Nile Jarvis in the Netflix thriller

The Beast in Me depicts the story of Danes's Aggie, an author, who has been reeling in the grief of losing her son in an accident and her failed marriage following the event. Her life takes a drastic turn when Matthew Rhys's Nile Jarvis comes to live in her neighborhood with his second wife.

They approach Aggie to approve a jogger's path that he wants to build in their shared forest, but she refuses. He invites her to have lunch with him to convince her and give her approval. He also lets her write her next book on him to make her sign the approval. However, with the disappearance of the teenager who killed Aggie's son in an accident, she started to link him with the incident and began digging into his past. This began the cat and mouse story between the two complicated characters as Aggie starts looking into his past, digging into the truth about his first wife's disappearance.

During the Deadline interview, he was asked about how he channelled the creepiness required to play the formidable real estate mogul, as he had earlier made a joke about parking outside Danes's house to prove to the producers that he could be creepy too. However, he later shared that it was their agreeing to cast him in the creepy role after a normal conversation, which he found more "sinister".

Apart from opening about how he got the role in The Beast in Me, Rhys also shared what made him take the role and said:

“The simple one is, do I want to turn the next page? Do I want to finish this?"

Helmed by Howard Gordon, who is known for his work in Homeland, which also starred Claire Danes, and 24, The Beast in Me creates an intriguing and thrilling story about these two complex characters, keeping the audience on edge until the end.
