It has been more than a month since Reacher Season 3 finale aired but the excitement among the viewers seems everlasting. With unprecedented twists in the plot line, emotional throwbacks, sporadic drama, intense action and an outstanding showdown in the finale, the latest Lee Child adaptation has outdone its own records.
Till date, Prime Video's Reacher stands at one of the top trending spots and with more spin-offs already underway, the future of the franchise seems promising. However, thar much-anticipated yet debated Paulie(Olivier Richters) v/s Reacher (Alan Ritchson) fight sequence in Reacher Season 3 finale has left certain questions in my mind.
The obvious one is how does Reacher match the beastly strength of Paulie? Even after so many blows, our titular hero fought back with all his might and spirit. But Paulie almost killed him two times - once on land and the other time in water. It is obvious that being the protagonist Jack Reacher needs to stand strong but the finale didn't explain how he survived these two almost irreversible situations.
Reacher Season 3 finale's Paulie v/s Reacher fight made it a bit convenient for our titular hero
I had been eagerly waiting to see how the Paulie v/s Reacher fight would turn out to be and in my honest opinion, the set up was really nice. With Quinn reaching Beck's mansion and holding his son as bait (while preparing for his guns deal with the Yemenis),the finale set up the perfect mood for a showdown.
It is also worth mentioning how Reacher, Susan Duffy and the others were tricked by Quinn about where the deal was supposed to take place - it helped to build up tension in the final episode with the perfect title "Unfinished Business". However, Reacher almost missed out the chance of getting his Unfinished Business with Quinn wrapped - thanks to Paulie.
The much-awaited fight kicks off with our titular hero striking the first blow and catching Paulie off-guard. But as the duel culminates, things turn intense and Reacher is thrown around like a toy by the fearsome antagonist. Thanks to his spirit and determination that Reacher keeps going and I totally appreciate how the fight seemed so real.
But after Paulie knocks him out and hangs him with a long thick chain from the roof of the warehouse, we see Reacher struggle to death. While watching the final, I was pretty convinced that he won't make it out, speaking logically (though I knew the story demands he would).
It seemed pretty impossible yet convenient, according to me, for Reacher to have survived the situation by turning himself upside down, breaking the chain off the roof (using his feet) and crashing on the ground in one piece. Pauli had almost got him when Reacher again emerged out of nowhere amidst the compound and the next fight sequence takes place by the rocky coast.
Blows are struck once again and both Reacher and Paulie land in the turbulent sea after rolling down the rocks. With the tides peaking and an unfavorable terrain, it seemed like neither our hero nor the antagonist would survive the fall.
But as expected they did and I could not help but wonder how the underwater fight, despite the strong ocean currents, raged on for minutes - it could have easily been the end of Reacher. Surprisingly, he survives again and this time, gets the advantage by knocking Paulie out (but that was not the end of it, like we already know).
I felt these two Reacher Season 3 finale sequences were one of those where, even though the situations prefer, the hero needs to be kept alive at any cost. It is maybe due to this reason that we never got to see how Reacher made out of the warehouse or the raging ocean waters and the cut instead took us to the next scene directly.
