Reacher doesn't fall short when it comes to delivering a satisfying punch to the face, literally and emotionally. Nobody probably expected Season 3, Episode 4 to simply shatter their souls. This episode was emotionally charged and is perhaps one of the most heartbreaking in the entire series.

This episode is titled “Dominique,” and it feels different from the beginning. The episode is told in a flashback, and this one is not about the usual heavy action sequences that we often see in the show. It is a memory of a woman who mattered to Reacher.

In fact, the woman was almost like a female counterpart to our titular hero. Had she lived, he might have found a worthy partner in her. Their relationship wasn’t romantic. It was more of a mentor-mentee kind of relationship that often leaned into Reacher’s admiration for her.

In that episode, we learn about Dominique Kohl. Through flashbacks, the episode lets us sit in rooms she once walked through. We see Reacher genuinely impressed by someone. And we see him trust someone enough to let them lead. And if you’ve watched even a single episode, you know how rare that is. This episode gives us an old but unforgotten bond. And then it breaks us.

Reacher: Dominique deserved much better

Dominique Kohl was sharp, brave, and more than capable. She matched him beat for beat, not just in grit but in decency. You could see it in the way he looked at her with a kind of respect. That’s rare in this series. She was a rookie with fire in her gut, and instead of protecting her, he did what any good leader thought he should do. He trusted her.

And that’s what makes it all hurt even more. He didn’t lose her because she was reckless. He lost her because he believed in her. And that’s the kind of tragedy that makes your chest tighten. The guilt sits heavy on Reacher’s shoulders, and he still burns with rage when he thinks of the incident. That's the only reason why he even agreed to help Susan Duffy, as it involved the very man who brutally killed Dominique.

The actual event, that is, the moment she dies, isn’t shown in gruesome detail. Instead, it leans into restraint, trusting us to feel the horror without needing to see it. But perhaps that’s even worse. Because imaginations tend to fill in the gaps, and that's what happened to him as well. He couldn’t get the thought of how she was killed out of his mind.

The episode lets us sit in that discomfort. Being a stoic, Reacher doesn’t break down or even fully express his feelings. But he looks haunted, and it makes Dominique’s story feel very real.

The revenge that follows isn’t about pride or even about justice in the usual way. It’s about regret and about loss. It's about the one time he couldn't save someone and the fact that he still carries that with him.
