Cristin Milioti has had quite a successful year, with Black Mirror getting nominated for ten Emmy Awards and The Penguin for twenty-four. The Penguin is the HBO series that follows the rise to power of Oz Cobb, following the events of The Batman (2022). The show serves as the spin-off of the 2022 film and has become more than just an adaptation of a comic.
The show stars Colin Farrell as the titular character, The Penguin, and Cristin Milioti as Sofia Gigante. In an interview with Jimmy Fallon at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Milioti spoke on the love and support her character has received from fans and a special interaction with a fan that meant a lot to her.
Cristin Milioti on the support her The Penguin character has received so far
The Penguin premiered on HBO on September 19, 2024, and the eight episodes were released till November 10, 2024. Cristin Milioti plays the daughter of the deceased crime lord Carmine Falcone in The Penguin, Sofia Gigante, who adopted her mother's surname simply to spite the memory of Carmine.
After Falcone's death, his right-hand man, Oz Cobb, took control of Gotham's criminal underworld, which was partly possible due to Sofia being admitted to the Arkham State Hospital. She is presumed to be psychotic and a serial killer, which makes her extremely dangerous. After being released from the hospital, she fights Cobb to regain control of Gotham City.
Cristin Milioti has been highly praised for her performance as Sofia and has been nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in 2025. Speaking to Jimmy Fallon at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Milioti spoke on the love and support her character has received so far, saying,
"I mean, the reactions have been so meaningful. I'm stopped by so many people on the street who are so lovely, so many people who tell me that they don't really like- they're not Batman people but that they started to watch the show and it sucked them in."
She went on to explain a specific special interaction, saying,
"And I had a very meaningful interaction. I was at the Joni Mitchell Hollywood Bowl Show, which was astonishing and a woman stopped me in the bathroom, she was maybe in her 70s and she just gently touched my arm and she said, she like, looked me right in the eyes, and she went, "I love Sofia so much. I love her." And then squeezed my arm and I started crying. Because it just, like it just meant so much, you know? Yeah."
Milioti humorously added,
"And I don't know, I mean, maybe she was a huge Batman fan, I don't know. But, like, it's been really, really, lovely. And it's been lovely to be part of a show that I loved making so much and that people have received with love."
The Penguin has bagged a high number of Emmy Nominations, and if it manages to win many of them, the show will be even more successful than it already is.
The Penguin has been created by Lauren LeFranc and produced by Dana Robin, Nick Towne, Corina Maritescu, and Claudine Farrell. The production companies behind the show are Acid and Tender Productions, 6th & Idaho Motion Picture Company, Dylan Clark Productions, Chapel Place Productions, Zobot Projects, DC Studios, and Warner Bros. Television. Other than Farrell and Milioti, the cast of the show includes Rhenzy Feliz, Deirdre O'Connell, Michael Zegen, and Berto Colón, among others.
The Penguin is streaming on HBO Max.
