Serial killer Dexter Morgan, portrayed by Michael C. Hall, is one of the most intriguing television characters of all time. "Dexter," which premiered in 2006, follows the story of a serial killer who works as a forensic blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department.
He adheres to a moral code of killing only the guilty to control his compulsion to commit murder. Hall shared that he researched extensively for his character, which included reading materials on serial killers.
During an interview with Jonathan Ross, Hall shared,
“I have read transcripts of interviews with serial killers, books by FBI profilers. Ultimately there’s an imaginative leap required with something like this unless you’re willing to commit a felony...I think Dexter is singularly unique, sort of fantastical character. I didn’t in my research encounter anyone quite like him.”
Hall also went on to share that he had stalked people in real life as part of his research. He said,
“One thing I did do I tried to get a sense of what it felt like to stalk people so when I was living in New York when I was getting ready to do the show and I would go out to a restaurant or a bar and find someone who seemed to alone and endow them with reprehensible characteristics and follow them around…I didn’t follow them home, I just wanted to see what it felt like to follow someone covertly. It was really easy.”
When Ross asked him about the many corpses on the show, Hall shared that they are all prosthetics. He shared,
“The are remarkable realistic…I know that they are fake and it’s really easy to believe that they’re real.”
Dexter ran for eight seasons on Showtime. The show achieved great success, leading to spinoff series such as Dexter: New Blood and Dexter: Original Sin. Michael C. Hall is set to reprise his celebrated role as Dexter Morgan in the upcoming Paramount+ series Dexter: Resurrection, which is a sequel to Dexter: New Blood, a spinoff of the original Dexter series. Resurrection is developed by Clyde Phillips.
