Jim Parsons, famous for his role as Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory, doesn't just act in the show's prequel, Young Sheldon. He's also an executive producer and the narrator.

In a 2017 interview with CBS This Morning, he talked about the spin-off and had lots of good things to say about the people who make the show.

He called their work:

"Really miraculous, in my opinion."

Jim Parsons thought about how Young Sheldon created its unique identity while staying true to Sheldon's core character. He talked about the show's beginnings and his experience moving from acting to directing.

Iain Armitage, the young actor playing Sheldon, was excited to get the part. Parsons was amazed at how the show's creators turned Young Sheldon into a separate show, not just a copy of The Big Bang Theory.

Jim Parsons said:

"It is its own show, it’s its own memory play, it’s an origin story."

The chat looked at how Young Sheldon was made and why people liked it.

Young Sheldon became more than just a prequel

When Young Sheldon was announced, some thought it would just be a prequel to The Big Bang Theory with a younger actor playing the same role. But it turned out differently. The show goes back to the late 1980s to show us Sheldon Cooper's early life, focusing on his feelings and relationships.

Young Sheldon isn't like The Big Bang Theory, which is a sitcom with a laugh track and multiple cameras. Instead, it uses one camera to tell a more detailed story. It looks closer at how Sheldon gets along with his family.

His mom, Mary, played by Zoe Perry, is religious, and his dad, George Sr., played by Lance Barber, tries to understand him. Sheldon's genius-level intelligence makes his social challenges stand out even more. Jim Parsons, who plays the adult Sheldon, had a big part in creating Young Sheldon.

In an interview on CBS This Morning, he said the idea came from his own smart nephew, who grew up in Texas. He talked to Chuck Lorre, who also made The Big Bang Theory, and they knew it could be a good show.

Jim Parsons said the prequel stands on its own:

"They jumped at it, and what they’ve done with it is really miraculous."

Jim Parsons mentored Iain Armitage behind the scenes

The strong bond between Jim Parsons and Iain Armitage is a delightful part of Young Sheldon. Although Parsons portrayed Sheldon for more than ten years, Armitage still had to build his unique version of the character, keeping continuity with The Big Bang Theory in mind.

In 2017, Armitage, who was only nine at the time, talked about how thrilled he was to get the role. He admitted that he didn't fully understand how big of an opportunity it was for him.

"I was just so happy and excited," he recalled.

Jim Parsons also revealed that he had made his audition tape in a laid-back manner at his grandmother's place.

Now, serving as the executive producer, he talked about the difficulty of mentoring a young performer without influencing their acting style.

"It really is its own character," he explained.

Young Sheldon is a show that shows us how Sheldon's unique traits and behaviors grew as he got older. It lets us see his first times with comic books, how his style changed, and how people had a hard time keeping up with his smart brain.

Even though he's not always the main one you see on screen, Jim Parsons had a hard time telling others how to act.

Jim Parsons confessed,

"I’ve never been someone who’s comfortable giving another actor direction."

However, he was quick to praise Armitage, saying,

"He’s very smart, very flexible, and resilient."

Parsons also pointed out Armitage's natural ability and commitment to his craft.

Young Sheldon is on Paramount+ and HBO Max and is also airing on CBS.
