Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, The Paper, is a mockumentary sitcom that is a spinoff of the famous show, The Office. Featuring Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, Melvin Gregg, and others, the series focuses on a group of quirky employees at the Toledo Truth Teller, which is a struggling Midwestern newspaper.
The show focuses on how the same documentary crew that covered the workers at Dunder Mifflin in The Office, have now decided to cover the historic newspaper in The Paper, as it tries to re-establish itself in the wake of a new editor-in-chief and volunteer reporters.
Gleeson plays the role of Ned Sampson, who is the new editor-in-chief and wants to rebuild the Toledo Truth Teller. Impacciatore plays Esmeralda Grand, who is the managing editor of the newspaper and opposes Ned’s authentic journalism as she wants to fill the paper with sensational articles instead.
The character of Esmeralda is conniving and brash and therefore, fans have a lot to say about her character online. Here’s a look at how her character is not being favored by the viewers of The Paper.
Who is Esmeralda in The Paper and why are fans not liking her? Details explored

The character of Esmeralda is the total opposite of Ned Sampson in The Paper. While Ned Sampson abides by the rule of journalism and wants the Toledo Truth Teller to be established as a reputed paper, Esmeralda is more than happy to publish tabloid pieces in the paper and keep the publication controversial.
Throughout the series, Esmeralda opposes Ned’s policies and is extremely protective of her position as the managing editor of the paper. Her character is therefore hilariously attention-seeking and chaotic, so it's no wonder that fans of the show are not particularly enthusiastic about her character.
In an interview with People, actress Sabrina Impacciatore spoke about her character Esmeralda in the series. As an Italian actress, Impacciatore states that she felt that the role was a challenge for her as she is an Italian and she didn’t know if her “sense of comedy...will...ever translate...”
In the same interview, the actress also spoke about the fact that Gleeson was extremely “focused” on set and that became her motivation to do better. “Somehow, I was inspired. I said, I have to be even nastier...I have to be even worse, because I wanted him to really feel, and i think he wanted me to really feel,” the actress states.
For those who don’t know, Sabrina Impacciatore is an Emmy-nominated Italian actress, who has previously appeared in The White Lotus Season 2, before joining The Office spinoff. The actress has worked for decades on stage, movies, and TV in Italy and earned an Emmy nomination for her role of Valentina in The White Lotus Season 2.
Details about Esmeralda's character in The Paper and the online buzz around it

In a Reddit post online, fans have begun to share their thoughts about the character of Esmeralda on the show. A user named “MusclyArmPaperboy” states,
"The Paper is a spiritual sequel to The Office and while it's slow to start it does have its charm. I've watched 4 episodes now and I like what they're trying to do, but what's making it difficult for me to get back and keep watching is Esmerelda .
The character is an obvious foil but it's set up so poorly that they have no redeeming characteristics and any momentum is instantly killed.
For this show to succeed, they need to do a Parks & Rec type reset, remove this one character and maybe bring someone else from The Office."
Other viewers like “DebateSea3046” also stated that
“I knew who this was about before I even opened the post.”
Even though fans agree that she is meant to be annoying and a foil to the character of Ned Sampson, Esmeralda is just too much for the fans to digest. Another user named "Hippies_Pointing" commented that,
"Completely agree. It’s like she’s from a 90s sitcom. She’s the wacky neighbor. Bizarre choice for this cast."
In the show, Esmeralda not only bickers with Ned over the choice of stories that need to go in the paper, but she regularly tries to take the spotlight away from him and also hinders Ned’s romance with Mare.
During the first season, Ned’s efforts pay off as the paper is nominated at the Ohio Journalism Awards and Oscar and Mare win for their articles. Ned was also supposed to get the award for the best print coverage but before he can come on the stage, Esmeralda and Ken decide to take the credit. Esmeralda even collapses on stage so that she can get some attention.
In Season 1 of The Paper, Esmeralda also creates misunderstandings between Ned and Mare by telling Ned that Mare is asexual, which is a lie. While the couple reunited eventually, Mare is surprised that Ned believed Esmeralda and did not ask her directly. Therefore, for all these reasons, it seems that Esmeralda’s character is getting fans’ ire.
It remains to be seen how the character of Esmeralda will shape up in the future as the show has already been renewed for its second season. However, fans of the show have seemingly given their verdict against her.
