Reply 1988 is considered one of those K-dramas that made Korean shows globally popular. Premiering in 2015, the K-drama tells the story of five families living in the Ssangmun-dong district of Seoul city. The K-drama is a tale of love and warmth among the five friends and their families, and how, despite the circumstances in their lives, they supported each other.

In the reunion, Lee Hye-ri, who played the character of Sung Deok-sun, the middle child of the Sung family, who often thought of being neglected by her parents, will appear alongside her family from the K-drama, which includes Sung Dong-il, Ryu Hye-young, Lee Il-hwa, and Choi Sung-won. Along with Hye-ri, Park Bo-gum, who played Choi Taek, the Go champion and the quietest member of the friend group, will also make an appearance. The K-drama is among Bo-gum's most prominent shows.

Other cast members who will appear in the 10th Anniversary reunion include Ra Mi-ran, Choi Moo-sung, Kim Sung-kyun, Ryu Jae-nam, Go Kyung-pyo, Lee Dong-hwi, Ryu Jae-nam, Lee Min-ji, and Kim Sun-young. It was speculated that Ryu Jun-yeol, who appeared as Kim Jung-hwan, wouldn't be seen in the reunion episode, but it is now confirmed that he will also make an appearance in the reunion special.

The variety show will see the stars of one of the most popular K-dramas of the 2010s gather together after a decade since the show's premiere. In a teaser video shared of the reunion special, Ra Mi-ran, who portrayed Jung-hwan's mother, stated how hard it was for all of them to gather like this. The anticipation of the reunion special has increased tenfold after tvN shared a poster of the special program where the cast recreated the original poster of Reply 1988.
