Everything you need to know from Dexter: New Blood before the premiere of Dexter: Resurrection.

Dexter hangs up his boots and knives to embrace a non-dramatic life in Dexter: New Blood

Dexter: New Blood takes off straight after the original series. We find Dexter living in the fictional town called Iron Lake in New York under the fake identity of Jim Lindsay. At the end of the original series, Dexter had faked his death and had left his son, Harrison, behind. He now works as a lumberjack and is keeping his urge to kill at bay.

Dexter’s life is borderline boring as he does chores and has a work life like any other person in town. He is also in a romantic relationship with the Chief of Police, Angela Bishop (played by Julia Jones). However, things take a new turn (as it should) when his abandoned son Harrison, turns up.

Parenting while moonlighting as a killer

Harrison (played by Jack Alcott) reveals that he was living in Europe, but after his mother, Hannah’s death, he found himself in the foster system. While looking for his father, he found letters from Dexter and tracked him down. Dexter decides to embrace his role as a parent.

Dexter: New Blood finally gives the audience the man we knew all along. We find Dexter unable to turn a blind eye to the misdeeds of a fellow townsman, Matt Caldwell (played by Steve M. Robertson), who was probably behind the deaths of five people. Dexter’s urge to kill takes over after realizing the truth about Matt. He debates with the ghost of sister Debra (played by Jenniger Carpenter) that this will be the only time he will kill someone, so he can focus on his son.

Just after he kills Matt, he gets suspicious of his father, Kurt (played by Clancy Brown). He deduces that Kurt is probably responsible for the disappearance of many young women in the town.

Harrison shares his father’s darkness in Dexter: New Blood

Harrison, on the other hand, is having a hard time fitting into the school. He would often get into fights, and his behavior worries Dexter, who starts believing that his son may have inherited his darkness.

By this point, the audience is aware that Kurt is guilty of the crime, and it is reinforced when Angela shares information about missing women in the area with Dexter. Dexter is caught in a dilemma about what to do next, as he wanted Matt to be his final kill. But circumstances keep making it complicated for him, especially after Dexter learns about Harrison’s drug overdose, and he sets out to seek retribution from the drug dealers.

Kurt comes to learn that Dexter killed his son, making it difficult for Dexter to use the law against him. Kurt kidnaps Harrison, but Dexter manages to rescue him. Dexter shares about his tendencies to Harrison, who also seems to share similar traits with his father.

However, when they encounter the trophies that Kurt kept after torturing and killing the women, Harrison is aghast. Harrison is also disturbed after Kurt’s killing, indicating that he may not be sharing all of his father’s darkness.

Angela discovers Dexter’s identity

In Dexter: New Blood, while recollecting a conversation with Angel Batista (played by David Zayas) from Miami, Angela realizes that Dexter has had previous experience with crime scenes. Yet, his serial killer identity remains buried. Angela is wary of Dexter for hiding the truth, but she takes his help to find the body of a friend who went missing long ago.

Angela also starts suspecting Dexter’s behavior as she doubts he has killed two drug dealers. Angela receives a letter that indicates Dexter is Matt’s killer. She hesitantly arrests Dexter and even gets in touch with Batista, who is surprised to learn that he is alive.

Dexter is shot by Harrison at the end of Dexter: New Blood

Wanting to get back to his son, Dexter kills a police officer. His action goes against his code of killing innocent people and showcases that Dexter is now unhinged. This is also the turning point for the already traumatized Harrison, who cannot accept that his father is a murderer.

Seeing his son struggle to accept the dark side of his father, Dexter tells Harrison should put an end to it. Dexter prepares to take it as a punishment for all the crimes he has committed, and wants his son to sever his connection with him. Harrison shoots his father, who falls into the snow and is assumed dead.

Angela comes in at the nick of time to send off Harrison with money and decides to take the blame for the murder herself.

In the trailer for Dexter: Resurrection, we see Dexter getting ‘resurrected’ in a hospital and is visited by Angel. Dexter manages to escape to New York City, where he is employed by a rich man called Leon Prater (played by Peter Dinklage) who is putting together a team of serial killers. The city is also home to his missing son, Harrison. With more serial killers in play and a possible father-son reunion waiting to happen, this could be one of the more interesting Dexter spinoff shows yet.

Dexter: Resurrection will see many of the original cast reprising their roles, including Jack Alcott as Harrison Morgan, James Remar as Harry Morgan, and David Zayas as Angel Batista.

Dexter, created by Clyde Philps, ran successfully for 8 seasons on Showtime. The franchise further expanded to other spinoff shows, Dexter: New Blood, Dexter: Original Sin, and the upcoming series Dexter: Resurrection, which will premiere on July 11th, 2025, on Paramount+ Showtime.
