Rick & Morty Season 8 is bringing back the Rick & Morty charm one episode at a time. The show continues to experiment with unique narratives and is even trying out some new formats, and it seems to be paying off, considering the great reviews that the show is receiving.
Released on June 2, Episode 2 of Season 8, titled 'Valkyrick', was another experiment that paid off, even though Rick & Morty decided to completely sideline Morty in this episode, and instead focus on Rick on a solo adventure as he goes on a mission to help Space Beth, and even enlisted help from beloved side characters Birdperson and his daughter. Briddaughter and her father's return is especially exciting for the show, as it seems to be setting a new trend for Rick & Morty Season 8.
Rick & Morty Season 8 episode 'Valkyrick' featured the return of Birddaughter and her father

Even though "Valkyrick" experimented with a solo episode focusing on Rick's solo mission without Morty, it managed to deliver. In this episode, Rick goes on a solo mission to help Space Beth fight against the Gromflomites' evil agenda. However, they suffer some setbacks, which lead Rick to ask his best friend, Birdperson, for help.
Birdperson arrives with his daughter, Birddaughter, who we last saw in Season 7 living with her father after she was rescued from a Galactic Federation prison. At that time, the two of them shared a difficult relationship, since Birddaughter was an angsty teenager who preferred living in prison over living with her father. However, it appears that they've managed to heal their relationship as seen in Rick & Morty Season 8.
Nevertheless, she joins him in the mission to help kill some Gromflomites. This is not surprising, she's shown to have a hostile, violent, and aggressive streak in her after having grown up in prison, but this hostility is thankfully not directed at her father anymore. Birddaughter joins the mission primarily so that she can kill Gromflomites, which she does, and that too quite gleefully. Additionally, she also helped Rick and Space Beth by rescuing them before the cave blew up.

Birddaughter has this wild side to her, which is really exciting to witness alongside Rick's evil genius. So, hopefully, Rick & Morty Season 8 will continue to feature cameos from her and even explore her experiences growing up in prison, which likely contributed to her violent tendencies. Nevertheless, the fact that this was a solo episode focusing on Rick, completely sidelining Morty, did not take anything away from the show, as the focus on the side characters was well executed.
Rick & Morty Season 8 can experiment with these side characters as long as it does not lose the exciting adventures and quirky humour that make it great in the first place.
New episodes of Rick & Morty Season 8 drop every Sunday at 11 p.m. ET/PT. Episode 3, titled "The Rick, The Mort & The Ugly", will be released on June 8.
