Rick and Morty is just packed with the weirdest bunch of characters you could ever imagine. Mad geniuses, mutants, a talking dog plotting world domination: it’s chaos, but like, in the best possible way. Some characters are smart and helpful. Others are dangerous and weird. And a few are just completely unhinged, the kind of characters you’ll never forget, no matter how much you try.

Let’s take a look at the best, worst, and most unhinged characters in Rick and Morty, ranked based on how much they stood out in the show.

Ranking the characters of Rick and Morty

1. Rick Sanchez: The genius and the chaos

Rick’s kinda the whole show, let’s be real. Wild scientist, brain the size of a planet, builds whatever pops into his head: portal guns, killer robots, you name it. He jumps through dimensions like he’s running errands. But man, he’s a nightmare to hang out with. Rude, selfish, and somehow manages to ruin his family’s day before breakfast.

He’s got a bottle glued to his hand most of the time, laughs in the face of any rule, and just blurts out whatever messed-up thing is on his mind. Still, people can’t get enough of him. Maybe it’s the genius thing, or just his insane sense of humor? He’s a total trainwreck, but you kinda love him for it. Rick’s the smartest guy in the room and also sometimes the absolute loosest cannon at the same time.

2. Morty Smith: The sidekick with a golden heart

Morty’s Rick’s grandson, he’s just your standard awkward teenager who somehow ends up dodging death rays and space monsters every other Tuesday. Half the time, the poor kid’s just trying to keep his head on straight while Rick’s blowing up planets or turning people into pickles. Morty cares about not being a total jerk, which makes him the only one in that show with any common sense.

Sometimes, though, Morty gets angry or even violent. In some episodes, we see dark versions of him that show how much he's changed. But deep down, he’s still depicted as kind and loyal in Rick and Morty.

3. Evil Morty: The Darkest version of Morty

Evil Morty is a version of Morty from another universe in Rick and Morty. He’s smart, cruel, and hates how Ricks treat Mortys. Dude’s a straight-up mastermind. He pulls fast ones, sets up nasty traps. He couldn’t care less who gets wrecked in the process.

This guy’s thirsty for power. He’ll do whatever it takes, even if we’re talking murder. On the surface, sure, he looks chill. But there’s ice in those veins. When Evil Morty ditched the whole multiverse, jaws hit the floor.

4. Mr. Poopybutthole: The odd but friendly guy

With a silly name and a stranger look, Mr. Poopybutthole is cheerful, polite, and seems harmless. This fan favourite character shows up in surprise moments and always adds a bit of joy, even when things get dark.

He also has one of the saddest storylines. In one episode, he gets shot by mistake. Later, we see him go through hard times, including a heartbreak. Behind his silly voice is a lot of pain. In Rick and Morty, he’s not evil or wild, just weird in a good way.

5. Summer Smith: The sassy and smart teen

Summer is Morty’s sister. As the show goes on, the teenager becomes braver and sharper. She wants to be part of Rick’s adventures. Here, she proves herself more than once in Rick and Morty.

She’s strong-minded, sarcastic. She doesn’t always follow the rules, and sometimes gets into trouble. But she also brings a fresh energy to the group. Summer is not the most unhinged, but she’s bold and fun to watch.

6. Jerry Smith: The pathetic but lovable dad

Jerry’s the classic dad who can’t catch a break. The guy’s lost half the time, desperately fumbling for a shred of dignity while Rick’s out here roasting him every other minute. He wants to matter, but every time he tries, it’s like he faceplants right into disaster.

There’s this soft side to him as well. Like, he genuinely gives a damn about his family, even if he’s got the emotional intelligence of a potato. He’s not evil or anything. Just a regular dude trying to survive in a family that’s about as normal as a fever dream.

7. Birdperson: The wise warrior

Birdperson is one of Rick’s oldest friends. He speaks slowly, acts with care, and follows a calm way of life.

Unlike Rick, he believes in peace and friendship. But his life is full of pain. His partner betrays him, he dies, and later gets turned into a robot. Despite all that, he remains true to his values in Rick and Morty.

8. Tammy Guterman: The secret villain

Tammy rolls in all sunshine and giggles, just vibing as Summer’s buddy, no red flags in sight. But, bam, plot twist from hell, she’s a government spook who straight-up murders Birdperson at his wedding.

Honestly, she’s sharp as a tack but mean as a snake, and about as warm as a fridge. That whole betrayal? Brutal. It might be one of the nastiest gut-punches Rick and Morty has ever pulled. It proves the quiet ones are sometimes the most unhinged in the room.

9. Pickle Rick: The weirdest transformation

Pickle Rick is just Rick… turned into a pickle. He does it to avoid going to family therapy. What starts as a joke becomes a wild action episode where Pickle Rick fights rats and escapes a secret lab.

This version of Rick shows how far he’ll go to avoid emotions. It’s both funny and disturbing. Turning yourself into a pickle just to skip therapy? That’s as unhinged as it gets.

10. Squanchy: The wild and loyal friend

Squanchy’s a total wild card. He’s this scruffy space cat who can’t go five seconds without dropping the word “squanch” into literally everything. Dude lives for chaos and parties harder than anyone in the galaxy, but when the crap hits the fan?

He hulks out into this berserker beast and goes full gladiator. It’s kinda awesome. Honestly, you never really know what he’s gonna do.

Rick and Morty's world without limits

Rick and Morty is packed with characters who go beyond what we expect. Some are brilliant, some are awful, and some are just plain bizarre. From Rick’s wild mind to Morty’s growing courage, the show never stops surprising us.
