The 2014 book by E. Lockhart served as the inspiration for the American psychological thriller television series We Were Liars, and on June 18, 2025, it made its premiere on Amazon Prime Video.

The show centers on Cadence Sinclair, the oldest granddaughter of the Sinclair family, as she learns the sinister details about a terrible incident that happened on their exclusive island, Beechwood Island.

The show explores topics that mainly include memory loss, family secrets, and the consequences of lying. Rosemary Sinclair is the Sinclair's youngest daughter, and she drowned tragically in 1986, and her death was disregarded by the Sinclair family, who preferred to preserve their ideal image.

As per the storyline, Rosemary's memory is rarely acknowledged, but her terrible destiny haunts the family and has a tremendous impact on their lives.

In We Were Liars, the terrible fate of Rosemary Sinclair, Harris and Tipper Sinclair's youngest daughter, is central to the family's dark history. Rosemary perished in the summer of 1986, shortly before turning eleven, while swimming alone in the seas off the Sinclairs' private island, Beechwood Island.

The circumstances surrounding her demise are terrible. When a storm swept in, Agata, the family's au pair, went to get sweaters. Rosemary got caught up in the turbulent seas at the moment. Agata returned to find Rosemary struggling far from the coast. Unfortunately, Agata was unable to swim fast enough to save Rosemary, and she perished.

The reaction-or—or lack thereof—from the Sinclair family only serves to heighten the tragedy of Rosemary's passing, and Harris and Tipper made the decision to overlook the tragedy in spite of their sadness, and the family promptly forgot about it in We Were Liars.

As if nothing had changed in We Were Liars, the Sinclair daughters went back to school in the weeks after Rosemary's passing. There were no memorial services or times of grieving, and the family never mentioned her again. The Sinclairs were not the kind to confront difficult realities or show their sorrow. Instead, they kept up the appearance of a flawless family by continuing their custom of extravagant parties and get-togethers.

Rosemary's name appears just rarely throughout the series, largely by Bess, who reminds the family that she was the youngest Sinclair daughter before Rosemary's untimely death, and this is a significant element because it demonstrates how much the family strives to avoid their unpleasant history.

Rosemary is handled as if she did not exist. For Harris and Tipper, mourning their daughter's death would have disrupted their carefully created mask of happiness, and they would not let such a tragedy damage their beautiful lives.

When Harris responds fearfully to the possible threat Will confronts in the second season, it is even clearer that he needs to keep up a flawless public image throughout the series.

His terror is a reflection of his ingrained dread that his past will be revealed and that history may repeat itself and the Sinclair family's attempt to bury traumatic memories has only made the unresolved anguish worse in We Were Liars and this is shown by the terrible death of Rosemary, which the family refused to accept.
