It has become common knowledge in the past few months that Ryan Coogler is going to reboot The X-Files series soon. There isn't much information regarding the exact plot, cast, or crew involved, but it is something Ryan has been working on after he wrapped up Sinners. Created by Chris Carter, the original show initially aired on Fox for nine seasons from 1993 to 2002, and then again for two more seasons from 2016 to 2018.

The show was popular for featuring different strange cases in each episode and for blending mythology and science fiction with the cases, having something called “monster of the week.” Speaking on the podcast Happy Sad Confused hosted by Josh Horowitz, Ryan Coogler said that he intends to incorporate the most important part of the original X-Files show in his reboot series.

Ryan Coogler will incorporate the essential parts of the original show in his X-Files reboot series

One of the earliest news reports of Ryan Coogler working on an X-Files reboot surfaced in 2023. It came from Chris Carter, creator of the original show, when he spoke about it on the podcast On the Coast With Gloria Macarenko. He mentioned that a reboot of the original show was in the works, saying,

"I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast,"

He continued,

"So he's got his work cut out for him, because we covered so much territory."

Later, in speaking to Variety at the Cinespia Sinners screening at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Coogler opened up and said that he wants to reboot the show because of his mother. He said,

“Like my relationship with ‘Rocky’ with my dad, ‘The X-Files’ is one of those things with my mom,”

He continued,

“My mom means the world to me — she’s actually here tonight — so this is a big one for me. I want to do right by her and the fans. My mom has read some of the stuff I wrote for it. She’s fired up.”

In the most recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast hosted by Josh Horowitz, Ryan Coogler joined Horowitz in a conversation about his career, experiences, and much more. Horowitz asked Coogler if his reboot of The X-Files will incorporate mythology or have solo episodes, or do both.

In response, Coogler said,

"Yeah, I mean it wouldn't be X-Files if we didn't do both, you know. Um you know, we intend on having uh you know, both monsters of the week and also you know like the overarching conspiracy, you know what I'm saying? Grappling with that. Yeah. But that's what I'm doing now."

Thus, the reboot will have a similar format to the original show, which is great news for longtime fans. Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny played the protagonists of the original show. When Josh Horowitz asked Coogler if he’s going to involve Anderson in his reboot because he has reportedly talked to her recently, Coogler did not confirm or deny anything. He just said,

"I can't I mean, you know, I'm big fans of her. I'm big fans of David. You know what I mean? And uh that's all l can say."

Thus, we might see Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny in some capacity in the reboot series, but also might not, since Coogler hasn’t given a definitive statement. The reboot is in the very early stages of development, and thus, there isn’t much about it we can confirm. Stay tuned for more updates.
