In between, the production of almost all the Netflix titles was briefly impacted by the Hollywood strikes. Being the capital of Italy, the ancient city of Rome provided a solid foundational backdrop for the show. The city is world-famous for its old-world architecture and charm that serve as the repository of thousands of years-old historical landmarks and artifacts. This served as a perfect landscape for the show to illustrate the element of mystery contained in its narrative.

At the center of Sara - Woman in the Shadows is the protagonist Sara herself, who is a former secret services agent. Leaving her past behind, Sara tried her best to establish a normal life for herself. However, her life was ravaged by the unexpected loss of her son, who died a mysterious death. In order to investigate the reason behind her son's death, Sara is once again tossed into the murky world of espionage.

Although she possesses remarkable skills and acumen, she must take the help of her former colleague, Teresa. This soon turns into a slippery slope for Sara, as Teresa won't help her unconditionally and expects her to help with one of her own assignments. Sara eventually enlists the help of police officer Pardo, along with her late son's pregnant partner and photographer, Viola, to dive headfirst into the circumstances.
