Save Me K-drama ending explained: Sang-hwan and his friends’ final attempt to escape the religious cult

The 2017 K-drama Save Me, starring Ok Taec-yeon and Seo Yea-ji, follows the story of a group of friends who try to escape the religious cult, Goseonwon. While trying to fight difficulties in their personal lives, the characters put their final plan of destroying the cult in the finale.

At the end, Sang-mi’s culprit, Father Baek, who destroyed her and her family’s life, is burned to death, serving a perfect poetic justice to his storyline. On teh other hand, Dong-chul and Sang-hwan also save many prisoners from the cult’s grip while also bringing evidence of the cult’s and their leader’s dubious activities.

Sang-hwan also finds out about his father, Governor Han’s secret, which ends up destroying his image as a politician.

Save Me K-drama ending explained: Father Baek’s end

The final episode of Save Me started with Father Baek tricking his congregation into thinking that he could not be burned by fire. On the other hand, the new Heaven’s Bible turns to ash. In the episode, he also marries Sang-mi, who, in front of everyone, vows to be in his service.

However, as the episode progresses, it is revealed that he is nothing but a fraud who tricked the naive people and tried to become their almighty. However, his main goal was to have Sang-mi to himself and gain fame and money.

At the end, while he tries to force himself on Sang-mi, Sang-hwan saves her by fighting the cult leader. He later goes to his church, which is now doused with gasoline by Eun-shil, who reveals that a vision of hers told her to do so.

Father Baek tries to stop her but is knocked out by Sang-mi, who later takes the lighter, ready to take revenge, until Sang-hwan intervenes and stops her from committing murder. However, Father Baek, who was now lying in gasoline, knocks over some lit candles, due to which his body goes up in flames.

Before the death of Father Baek in the finale, Dong-chul and the gang move on with their plan. Sang-mi turns Dong-chul in as a traitor, who is then sent into the dungeons.

There, he finds numerous other people who have been kept in the dungeons as prisoners, his father being one of them. With Sang-hwan and the others’ help in rescuing the prisoners, while also fighting the cult later.

Wan-tae and his brother try to run away until the gang arrives to fight them, until the police arrive and catch the duo.

In the finale episode of Save Me, Sang-hwan desperately looks for his mother and meets with his father’s aide, Ji-hee. She asks him to give her his mother’s tape that has Governor Han’s confession, in exchange for learning his mother’s location.

Later, as he listens to his mother’s tape, Sang-hwan learns that his mother had learned about his father’s affair with Ji-hee. She threatens him that if he does not withdraw from the election, she will give this tape to his opponent. As she turns her back to him, Governor Han pushes his wife in an attempt to kill her.

At the end of the K-drama, Sang-mi’s mother informs Sang-hwan that his mother was in the cult’s nursing home. As he reunites with his mother, he also reveals his father’s attempt to kill his mother. This destroys his political image and also gets him arrested.

Kang Eun-shil later takes control of the cult as their spiritual mother, as the cult still goes on. However, Sang-hwan, Sang-mi, and their friends get to escape the life they were living in Goseonwon.
