Schitt's Creek is one of those shows that stays with you long after you've watched it. It randomly pops up in your head and makes you smile. An underdog in TV history, this Canadian comedy achieved great success and became a fan favorite in no time!
The show gave us some of the most memorable characters that were just iconic. We can never forget Moira Rose and her words. We can never get over Alexis’s “Ew, David!” even after we've watched it a hundred times! And it's next to impossible to forget David and his iconic fake smile.
Schitt’s Creek is about a filthy-rich family that loses everything and is forced to rebuild their lives in a rundown town they once bought as a joke. They find themselves sharing a couple of motel rooms and bumping heads with the locals of the town. Through lots of mishaps and laughter, they finally realize the warmth of the town.
All of this aside, we've all wondered how the show got its name. Was it just a clever pun?
Let’s know the real story behind how Schitt’s Creek got its unique name.
Schitt’s Creek: A joke, A town, and a whole lot of heart
Schitt’s Creek sounds like a cheeky pun at first. But it's actually much more than that. It's a take on how small towns are often perceived and misjudged.
Small towns sometimes get the short end of the stick. They’re known for having borderline ridiculous names. And it’s easy for outsiders to make fun of them. But small towns have a kind of charm you can’t find anywhere else. They’re humbling and heartwarming. That’s exactly what Schitt’s Creek wanted to capture.
The once-wealthy Rose family loses everything except for a town called Schitt’s Creek which Johnny bought as a joke years ago. Their initial experience is a nightmare. The motel walls are thin and the town council is a mess. There's nowhere to even get a decent latte. Terrible!
But the town grows on them slowly. It humbles them and becomes their home.
There’s even an idiom that goes with it perfectly:
“Up the creek without a paddle"
This means you’re in a hopeless or sticky situation. That’s exactly where the Rose family starts.
Co-creators Dan and Eugene Levy actually addressed the name’s origin in their book, Best Wishes, Warmest Regards: The Story of Schitt’s Creek. Dan shared that the idea was born during a session where Eugene and some friends were joking about fictional small towns with stores named things like “Schitt Hardware.”
It started as comedy but the Levys turned it into something deeper. They wanted to challenge the idea that small towns are only good for laughs. They reminded us that sometimes the place we least expect can change our lives in the most beautiful ways.
