Back to the Frontier sets a unique experience for the cast members to go back in time and live like their ancestors used to. However, sometimes, it can come off as a huge shock to them, especially given the hardships and problems involved with living like the old times.

These families have decided to step away from the 21st century and embrace a more traditional, older role. The shoe has challenged three families to live in Calgary, Alberta. They would have to spend just over two months in there.

The era they are reverting back to is the 1880s, and it ensures the lack of basic modern facilities. The families have to improvise on Back to the Frontier and be creative with their tactics to have a decent living at such a time as homesteaders would.

In an interview with Outside, Stacey Loper appeared with her husband, Joaquin, and they discussed what it was like to be on the show. Stacey said,

“I’m not an ‘outside girl’ at all... I set myself up for failure. I wouldn’t allow my mind to wrap around that this was truly the life I was about to live for the next eight weeks.”

Joaquin quipped at this and commented,

"I wasn’t prepared for how unprepared she was."

Back to the Frontier - The Loper family discusses their time on the show

Joaquin works in the United States Air Force and claims to love the outdoors. And thus, he had an idea of what Back to the Frontier would feel like. However, the tough part was surviving with his wife and kids and keeping them happy, who are all in for a challenge away from their comfort zones.

The family lives in Alabama in a huge house, but when they had to move to an older home, things were not as luxurious as they were accustomed to.

Thus, in order to help them adjust, Shirley, Joaquin's mother, joined the family for some time, who had experience living on a farm in the South and thus felt she could contribute to their attempt at living a simple life.

But for Stacey, things were all out of order. She did not like the high grass. Even their food got simpler and fresher, which they were responsible for harvesting around the house. Stacey revealed,

"I wasn’t a vegetable girl before the frontier. But, baby, I ate so many cucumbers, tomatoes, and carrots."

Back to the Frontier had changed her in a way that now her new routine is to get vegetables from the supermarket back into her normal life.

Discussing their kids, Joaquin said that the time away from electronics results in the kids being creative and finding other hobbies and interests. He said,

"One of the most beautiful things for me to see my kids do was run around with sticks playing cops and robbers. They were using their imagination instead of a screen, and building images in their mind instead of on the screen.”

Back to the Frontier releases weekly on Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern Time on Magnolia Network. Later, the episodes are available to stream online via HBO Max.
