Apple TV+’s Platonic has become famous for portraying male and female friendships differently from other sitcoms. Going by its title, the show proves that a boy and a girl can just be best friends, without romantic or complicated feelings.
However, a section of the audience is still expecting the leads, Sylvia and Will, to end up together in the series. Seth Rogen, who plays Will and also serves as an executive producer on the show, has revealed that the show is not going to take that route.
During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Rogen claimed that because of sitcoms like Friends, audiences have become used to watching buddies turning into lovers, and that is exactly what Platonic is not about. He said:
“I get why people think we’re gonna have s*x because of the f****** precedent that Friends set. [The show] ruined it for everybody.”
Seth Rogen talks about how Platonic will not incorporate the friends-to-lovers trope
During the interview, Seth Rogen talked about how Platonic fans are expecting Sylvia and Will to fall in love or sleep with each other. The reason behind the expectations, he feels, can be attributed to shows like Friends, where multiple couples were formed in the same group. Rogen stated:
“People are very fixated on this idea that we will one day get together. And I get why, honestly. Like, we grew up with a show called Friends, and they all f***** each other. Every friend f***** every other friend.”
Series creator Francesca Delbanco had earlier echoed similar thoughts in an interview with Deadline, where she opened up about how the team’s motive is to portray that some men and women can just remain best friends without any romantic feelings:
“There’s no suspense or tension about ‘Will they or won’t they?’ They’re just buddies. We thought it was important to try to represent that, the possibility that men and women can be friends with each other and those friendships can provide something friendships with your own gender can’t provide — or something extra.”
Platonic premiered on Apple TV+ in May 2023 and earned positive reviews for its authentic portrayal of adult friendships and situational humor. The show was then renewed for a second season, which started airing in August 2025.
The show chronicles the bond between Sylvia and Will, two former best friends whose lives bring them together again. Will is a recently divorced man, while Sylvia is a stay-at-home mother of three children.
Apart from Seth Rogen as Will, the show stars Rose Byrne as Sylvia, Luke Macfarlane as Charlie, Carla Gallo as Katie, Andrew Lopez as Reggie, Tre Hale as Andy, Alisha Wainwright as Audrey, Francesca Delbanco as Diane, Beck Bennett as Wild Card, Aidy Bryant as Carrie, and Kyle Mooney as Terry. The show has been created by Delbanco and Nicholas Stoller.
Platonic Season 2 airs new episodes on Apple TV+ on Wednesdays.
