The Mighty Nein, the animated series, tells the story of seven outsiders who ally not to save the war-torn world but to survive the brutalities together. Each character comes with their own flaws and trauma, and as the show progresses, they form a familial bond with each other.

The showrunner of The Mighty Nein, Tasha Huo, explains why Nott and Caleb’s rift in episode 7 was crucial while speaking with Screenrant. The two characters were survivors who clung to each other out of necessity. Their relationship began as they were dependent on each other. The characters, in between seasons, are, however, forced to separate, compelling them to grow as independents.

Sam Riegel, who plays Nott and is also the executive producer of the show, emphasizes that the season was designed to tell a complete story through their relationship. This is especially true after they split in Episode 7, “Belonging.”

Here is what the executive producer and showrunner has to say about Caleb and Nott's rift in The Mighty Nein

As mentioned, Sam Riegel pointed out how it was essential to show Caleb and Nott that they are on their own.

“So, getting to see them get together, getting to see the dynamics shift in their relationship with not telling Beau that she's there to protect Caleb. And then, ultimately, to have them have their first sort of fight and their first makeup, that felt like a really good arc for the season, really setting them on the road from being two individuals to being a partnership, and then maybe at the end of the season, being part of a team or a group,” said Reigel.

This suggests how Caleb and Nott’s partnership was filled with misunderstanding and secrets. With this rift, the characters have learned how to become equals within something larger than themselves. Therefore, the actor’s statement reflects how this rift isn’t a separation but more about learning how to come back stronger.

Here is what The Mighty Nein showrunner, Tasha Huo, said about the reunion and the newly formed meaning

Tasha Huo also reiterated the same by stating how even after six episodes of shared danger, the Mighty Nein aren’t truly a team yet. They survive together, but they don’t fully trust one another. She admits that she dislikes episode 7 in terms of emotion, but at the same time finds it important for the characters to transform. She expressed how Caleb has always been a people repeller.

"And I think too, something about the Caleb and Nott relationship is that Caleb is always someone who's trying to push people away."

However, when Caleb returns and acknowledges that he fears being alone and isolated, while Nott sees through his flaws, their reunion becomes more meaningful.

"And there was something to me so emotional about how, no matter what, Nott sees through all of the warts and all of the danger of him and wants to be his friend," continued Tasha.

By the time they reunite with The Mighty Nein and accept the Luxon Beacon mission, Caleb and Nott are no longer bonded by desperation alone. They’re beginning to trust each other and the group, as a chosen family.
