In Severance season 1 episode 2, Helly has gone through the process, and his new self is born inside Lumon. Mark then shows her the first file and explains the four emotional categories used to sort numbers, which takes Helly by surprise, as numbers had never carried any real meaning to her. Irving interrupts repeatedly, quoting the Lumon Handbook and scolding Mark for removing the group photos. Irving is deeply devoted to company rules and the Eagan principles.

This is when Helly asks Mark what will happen if she wants to quit. Mark informs her that her outie self must resign for that, and once it is accepted, her innie self will cease to exist. Helly finds herself confused by the time jumps as it feels like no time has passed for her, and yet a weekend has gone by. Mark tells her that the innies never experience nights or weekends. For them, time cuts simply from one workday to another.

A party is thrown in the office for Helly, and all of them play a "getting to know you" game in which each of them shares a fact about themselves. This is when Helly's innie realizes that he knows nothing about her. Milchick tells her about what her outie said. Helly is 30, and she has weak enamel and is allergic to almonds. He also suggested that Helly has a family outside Lumon.

Mark, in his turn, confesses that he hid the group photos with Petey as it was getting emotionally heavy for him.

After the group photo is taken, Helly's anxiety grows, and she abruptly decides that she is done with Lumon. She wrote a note to her outie saying she doesn't want to be there and runs to the elevator. The code detectors trigger alarms, and Doug Graner physically stops the elevator from closing. Mark steps in and tries to save her, but Graner drags him to the Break Room instead, where Cobel is sitting.

Later, Mark's outie goes on a date with Alexa, a midwife. She asks him some questions about Severance's ethics, and though Mark tries to defend it, he shows signs of unease. On the street, they see some activists from The Whole Mind Collective who suggest that Jame Eagan would try to sever even children. Mark is in the house and is seen with Gemma's old items when his painful memories of his late wife emerge.

The next morning, Mark decides to stay home and visit Petey instead. At Lumon, his absence alarms Cobel and Graner. Meanwhile, Dylan and Irving worry that he might have been fired. This makes Helly more anxious as she thinks she is the reason behind all of this.

Mark follows Petey’s map to the greenhouses at 499 Half Loop Road, where Petey is hiding. Petey reveals how reintegration sickness is destroying him. Lumon had intentionally isolated the departments, and he had mapped the floors while hiding the original map for Mark.

Finally, Petey plays a recording from the Break Room for Mark where Milchick forces him to repeat a statement of apology endlessly, refusing to believe his sincerity. It’s disturbing, robotic, and coercive.

Mark brings Petey to his home and sets up a makeshift sleeping area for him. Peter suffers another hallucination and collapses against the wall, and Mark helplessly checks if he is okay by the end of the Severance episode 2.
