Apple TV's Severance earned the most Emmy nominations this year, with 27 nominations marking a win for the streaming network, along with The Studio, which also received 23 nominations. An exceptional year for the platform with critically acclaimed shows releasing or being renewed every few months, it is exciting for the fans since Severance has already been renewed for another season.
However, in a recent conversation with Variety, Matt Cherniss, head of programming of Apple TV, delivered a disappointing update: that even though Season 2 wrapped up almost four months ago, Season 3 is yet to receive a start date for production.
Severance Season 3 is yet to receive a production start date, says a high-level Apple TV+ executive

The second season of Severance went a long way in earning the show its success and 27 Emmy nominations, turning it from a niche sci-fi show to one of the biggest hits this year. Since the Season 2 mind-bending finale premiered in March, the internet has been ablaze with theories regarding the next season and is eagerly waiting for some updates.
However, in a recent conversation with Variety regarding Apple TV+'s success at the 2025 Emmy nominations, Matt Cherniss, the head of programming, delivered what might come across as a disappointing news for fans. He revealed that Season 3 is yet to even go into production and hasn't even been appointed a production start date.
"No one wants it to be another three year gap…I don’t believe that we have a production start date yet, but we’re moving in that direction."
This delay does mean that Season 3 is extremely far off from our screens at the moment. It is also hard to predict exactly how far, since production start dates haven't been appointed. Although Cherniss did add that the network doesn't have any intention to have a three-year gap between the seasons, similar to Seasons 1 and 2, fans can expect it sometime after 2025 but before the end of 2027.
Cherniss also revealed that this delay is due to the fact that for an original show like Severance, it is extremely important for the creators and writers to ensure that what they deliver is up to the same level of, if not better than, what they've previously released. This means that they cannot rush this process, and it takes them time to ensure that the quality is not compromised, which is in a way positive news for the fans.
Cherniss stated:
"I think everyone’s just going to take a deep breath and enjoy where we’re at. I know they’re going as quickly as they can. When you have the success that a show like ‘Severance’ has, you want to make sure you deliver on every level when the show comes back, and that takes some time. But they’re on it, and I think I’m feeling really good about where we’re at."
Even though there will be some time before Severance Season 3 hits our screens, it is great that all the creative minds are putting their all into ensuring a quality product for the viewers. It's even better to witness them be rewarded for their efforts, with Emmy nominations not just for the actors and director, but for casting, choreography, cinematography, music composition and supervision, and picture editing as well.
