Severance was one of the biggest breakout shows for Apple TV+, with 27 Emmy nominations to its name, the most for any series, along with the 2 Emmy wins for Season 1 in 2022. The popularity that the show has managed to amass was completely well-deserved, but at the same time extremely unexpected.

When such series attain the level of popularity that the Apple TV show has managed to gain, something that the cast and crew can expect is the unofficial shipping of couples from the show. Such is the case with Severance, as, along with conspiracy theories about the show, the internet is filled with fans shipping couples together and making fan edits.

In a recent conversation with Variety, Severance stars Adam Scott and Britt Lower also jumped onto this shipping train and revealed the couple that they think fans should ship the most.

It is the rule of the internet that great popularity brings great shipping. Fans of the sci-fi show have taken to their dedicated fan pages with the unofficial shipping of so many couples from the show. From Mark's Innie and Helly to Burt and Irving, the shipping is relentless.

Recently, in a conversation with Variety, Adam Scott and Britt Lower, who play Mark and Helly on the sci-fi Emmy-nominated juggernaut, revealed their thoughts on the shipping and the concept of relationships between the innies and the outies.

Starting on an entertaining note, Britt Lower mentions that her favorite couple is Helly and Gemma on the show, the romantic interests of Mark's innie and outie.

"I’m secretly rooting for Gemma and Helly, but that’s a whole other thing."

Adam Scott commented on what a relationship might mean in Severance, getting deeper into the question of identity. Lower pointed out that the question relied on whether the innie was considered an actual person who is allowed to make decisions that affect the outie, like those of a relationship.

"We’re barreling towards that question of Mark getting to make a decision at the end, and is he allowed to make that decision? And that’s the question for me, at least embedded in that finale of, do we think he’s human? Or is the real human the outie, and that’s the one he should be making a decision for? I don’t have the answer, but it’s an interesting question."

This conflict gives rise to the main discussion that the finale of the second season revolves around, where Mark is forced to choose whether he follows Gemma outside or stays inside with Helly, and he makes a controversial choice. Mark's Innie has spent the entire season in Severance trying to help the love of his outie, whom he idealizes. However, by the end of this journey, the innie ends up falling completely in love with Helly, leading to the season's cliffhanger.

The idea of identity and existentialism is challenged quite irrevocably by the end of Severance Season 2, and we'll have to wait until the next season to understand the consequences of the controversial ending.
