The Fire Country universe has finally expanded with the release of Sheriff Country Season 1 on CBS. The new TV show follows Bode's aunt, Mickey Fox, a determined sheriff’s deputy who is temporarily serving as sheriff in Edgewater.
What makes this show even more exciting is that it's set in the same quiet town as Fire Country. So fans can look forward to a possible crossover between the firefighters and the sheriff's department in future episodes.
While Mickey's main aim is to keep her community safe, she's also a mother whose daughter is now recovering after battling addiction. At the same time, Mikey's father is an ex-convict trying to live a peaceful life in isolation.
Now, in Sheriff Country Season 1 episode 1, Mickey Fox works on a hidden abuse case, and her investigation begins, she finds shocking truths. The synopsis of the episode reads:
"When a young boy is caught stealing food, Mickey uncovers a disturbing case of child abuse that leads to a high-stakes rescue and a cliffside standoff that could cost lives. Meanwhile, Mickey's daughter Skye is newly sober, but her path to sobriety is complicated by her relationship with a troubled young man whom her mother arrested."
This explains how Mickey has to juggle between her duty and motherhood in the first episode of the CBS drama. The character is played by Morena Baccarin, who will remain the key figure of this show.
A detailed recap is right below.
Sheriff Country Season 1 episode 1 recap: Mickey struggles as a small-town sheriff
The episode opens with Mickey Fox, a dedicated deputy who is unexpectedly given the role of interim sheriff after her boss is murdered by another officer. Mickey is not someone who pursues power. She simply wanted to serve her town.
But now she will either run for sheriff officially, because she deeply cares about Edgewater and needs the small town's commitment to fund her work. Mickey also quickly discovers that local politics come with strings.
The town's powerful Rotary Club, which trusted the previous sheriff, doesn't seem to have a similar faith in Mickey. Due to the series of small break-ins in their area, people are doubting her leadership.
As the first episode of Sheriff Country moves forward, Mickey Fox learns that these burglaries were dismissed by her chief deputy, Boone, who thought stolen pantry food wasn’t important enough to tell her about. This oversight damages her image just when she’s trying to win the town’s trust.

A case uncovers hidden truths in Sheriff Country Season 1 episode 1
As Mickey investigates the food thefts herself, the situation turns from petty crime to something far darker. She discovers that the thief is a young boy named Simon, who was stealing food for his stepsister Maddie.
When Mickey digs deeper, she learns that Maddie is living in a nightmare: her cruel stepmother starves and abuses her, while Maddie’s father does nothing to stop it. Determined to protect the children, Mickey visits the family home but is thrown out for not having a warrant.
Then, the stepmother of the children creates fraudulent court documents to remove Simon from Mickey, and with her recognition to act legally, Mickey gets a court order to intervene. This is when she discovers Maddie is kept hidden in a place, and the child is malnourished.
When the abusive parents attempt to run away from the police with the younger children, it turns into a dramatic hostage situation. However, Mickey can save everyone before the family car drives off a cliff. Both parents are arrested, and Mickey tries her best to ensure the children are kept safe.
Mickey experiences family conflicts and chaos in Sheriff Country Season 1 Episode 1
The latest case of child abuse gave notable emotional strain to Mickey, and now she has to deal with her family problems. Her daughter, Skye, is finally sober, but she's still struggling to control herself.
To make things worse, she’s romantically involved with Brandon, a man Mickey previously arrested for dealing drugs. This puts Mickey and her ex-husband, Travis, on opposite sides once again. Being an attorney, Travis helped Brandon avoid charges.
This means that tension will continue to rise between Mickey and her ex-husband in Sheriff Country. Later, Mickey's father also arrives to live with her and his granddaughter. This time, he's aiming to live a crime-free life and sell marijuana legally in the town.
But his well-meaning gesture backfires when Skye’s boyfriend steals money from him to buy drugs. This triggers a chain of events that ends tragically: Skye’s boyfriend is later found stabbed, and the evidence places Skye at the crime scene with her fingerprints on the weapon.
So, the first episode of Sheriff Country concludes on a devastating note. Mickey had almost gained the trust of people in Edgewater and proved that she could be a strong candidate for the sheriff's position. However, her daughter's possible connection to the recent crime has once again threatened Mickey Fox's reputation.
