In an interview to USA Today, Baccarin talks about her role in the new police procedural series and how her character of Mickey was gradually introduced in Fire Country, which allowed the viewers a “trial run” to get used to her character in a broader role in Sheriff Country.

Further, she mentions that Mickey’s personal life will remain complex in the show and will be an important part. As she puts it down, Edgewater is a place where "you know everybody and everybody’s history.” Therefore, small-town politics and community life will be central.

Baccarin also underscores that her own journey of motherhood makes her “connect” with the character, as Mickey also is a strong woman and mother who wants to protect her daughter.

“In some ways, this part seems made for me, because I really connect with it,” she mentions.

Baccarin also prepared for the role by spending time with small-town police officers and asking them various questions about how they wore their belts and what kinds of calls they had to answer on the weekends. Ultimately, the actress reflects that Sheriff Country is a show that “allows for different colors in a leader," and she added,

“Sheriff Mickey is the mother of this town in a protective, lioness kind of way. She is pretty badass when she needs to be, but she's also vulnerable, even though she hates to be.”
