For fans of Shōgun, FX's landmark series that swept the 2024 Emmy Awards with an incredible 18 wins, the wait is nearly over! Both new power players and old allies are ready for Season 2's January 2026 start of filming in Vancouver. Based on James Clavell's best-selling book, the drama drew viewers in with its acting and visuals.
Deadline reports that the follow-up will be ten years after the end of Season 1 and will carry on the story of Lord Yoshii Toranaga and English pilot John Blackthorne, two men who hail from distinct worlds but have connected fates.
FX has announced who is returning to the series, who is new, and how the story expands its universe before the cameras start rolling.
So below is your complete breakdown!
The returning cast of Shōgun Season 2
As Lord Yoshii Toranaga, the shrewd and orderly warlord whose tactics characterised Season 1, Hiroyuki Sanada is at the top of his game.

Cosmo Jarvis is making a comeback as John Blackthorne. He will reprise his role as the English navigator who changed the course of Japan's history.
Returning actors Hiroto Kanai as Omi, Shinnosuke Abe as Buntaro, and Fumi Nikaidô as Ochiba join them. Tommy Bastow plays the religious Father Alvito, Yuko Miyamoto plays Gin, Eita Okuno plays Saeki, Yuka Kouri plays Kiku, and Yoriko Dôguchi returns to his role as Kiri.
Also coming back with extra gravity is Sanada, the first Japanese actor to win the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series. His rule looks to be far more hazardous than before, based on where we left Toranaga.
The new faces in Shōgun Season 2
Season 2 brings several new people to the Shōgun universe. Masataka Kubota plays Hyūga, and Asami Kizukawa joins as Aya. To round out a strong new cast, Takaaki Enoki will play Lord Ito, Jun Kunimura will play Gōda, and Sho Kaneta will play Hidenobu.
The Shōgun Season 2 production crew is as strong behind the camera. Shannon Goss, Matt Lambert, Maegan Houang, Emily Yoshida, Caillin Puente, and Sofie Somoroff join recurring writers Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks.
Directors will be newcomers Anthony Byrne (Peaky Blinders) and Kate Herron (Loki), but there will also be the OG Marks himself, Hiromi Kamata and Takeshi Fukunaga. After all, they are the ones who created some of the most visually stunning episodes of Shōgun Season 1.
The second season takes place ten years after Toranaga's rise to power. It goes over the next stage of Japan's evolution. As the relationship between the East and the West shifts, we will see unexpected partnerships and negotiations.
When Shōgun comes back, viewers in the US can watch new episodes on FX and tune into them on Hulu the next day. The series will be available to viewers worldwide on Disney+. All Season 1 episodes are now available for streaming on Hulu if you need a recap before Season 2 is released.
