A new update on Shōgun Season 2 has been revealed! If you loved this historical drama that takes a deep dive into Japan’s feudal era, then make sure to explore the time jump for the next chapter. Yes, you read that right.
The second season of the acclaimed FX drama is officially in motion, with production scheduled to begin in January 2026. After being initially designed as a one-time limited series, Shōgun is making a return thanks to the overwhelming success of its first season, including multiple Emmy wins and record-breaking viewership.
Per Deadline, the next season:
"... continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men [Yoshii Toranaga and John Blackthorne] from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined."
However, Shōgun Season 2 won't directly continue where the first left off in a traditional sense. FX has described it as a “wholly original new chapter" as the events will occur after almost a decade, which is ten years.
While the show is still inspired by history, this second chapter is not based on a specific book. The first season adapted James Clavell’s novel of the same name, but the rest of Clavell’s “Asian Saga” books focus on different characters and timelines.

Shōgun Season 2 will feature a fresh story set 10 years later

As mentioned earlier, Shōgun Season 2 will follow the story 10 years after the first season. Another big confirmation is that Cosmo Jarvis will reprise his role as John Blackthorne, the English navigator whose arrival in Japan reshaped the power dynamics of the country.
Interestingly, Jarvis hasn't signed up just to play Blackthorne but will also serve as a co-executive producer for the new season. Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays the powerful Lord Yoshii Toranaga, had already committed to coming back months ago, and his role has expanded, too, including executive producer.
Since the new season won't follow a specific source material, creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks crafted an entirely fresh narrative without a written guide. Still, they mentioned that they drew inspiration from unused characters and ideas in Clavell’s original novel to enrich the upcoming plot.
As for the plot, not much has been revealed, but we do know that Shōgun Season 2 will continue to explore the evolving relationship between Blackthorne and Toranaga. These figures are bound together by fate, and other different worlds are what make them unique.
The filming was expected to kick off in Japan, but the production will once again be based in Vancouver, Canada. It's not uncommon for TV series to face logistical challenges that Shōgun Season 2 also faced.
FX’s chairman, John Landgraf, explained:
"It is complicated because of the scale of the stage base and the scale of the production capacity there is just a little different."
The chairman mentioned that Japan doesn’t fully match the scale needed for a series as ambitious as Shōgun. So, the filming will take place according to the infrastructure and other crucial elements.
