Shifting Gears Season 2 is gearing up for its premiere on ABC. The comedy series is famous for its combination of humorous and heartwarming storylines as the gruff widower Matt Parker welcomes his daughter and grandchildren back to his home.
As Matt reels from the loss of his life, he has to adjust to his new lifestyle with the unexpected guests at his home. Meanwhile, life gives him another shot at love in the form of his frenemy, Eve.
ABC will be airing the first episode of Shifting Gears Season 2 on October 1, 2025. The episode will follow up on the previous season’s finale, where Matt and Eve finally came close and kissed each other.

Shifting Gears Season 2 Episode 1 will premiere on ABC on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at 8 PM ET / PT. If you are in the Central Time Zone, the episode will be aired in your region at 7 PM CT.
The show is going to follow a weekly release schedule with one new episode coming out every Wednesday. Unlike the previous season, which featured 10 episodes, the new installment is going to comprise 13 episodes.
If you do not have access to cable, you can watch the upcoming episode on Hulu. However, streaming viewers will have to wait a little longer as the episode will arrive on Hulu a day after its television broadcast, i.e., on October 2, 2025.
What to expect from Shifting Gears Season 2 Episode 1?
The episode, titled Secret, is going to pick up after the events of the previous season’s finale. Both Matt and Riley now have complicated romantic lives. While Matt is still thinking about his kiss with Eve, Riley is confused about whether she has feelings for her childhood friend Gabe.
Amid all this, Charlotte advises Matt to join a grief group as he still mourns his wife. Also, Riley has finalized her divorce from Jimmy. The logline for the episode reads:
“Matt wrestles with his feelings for Eve, and Charlotte convinces him to go to a grief group; Riley struggles with her own ‘will she or won't she’ about her feelings for Gabe.”
The show brings back Tim Allen as Matt Parker, along with Kat Dennings as Riley Parker, Jenna Elfman as Eve Drake, Seann William Scott as Gabriel, aka Gabe, Barrett Margolis as Georgia, Maxwell Simkins as Carter, and Daryl "Chill" Mitchell as Stitch.
