One of the most burning questions in the world of Stranger Things Season 5 is whether or not Kali be truly trusted? Is Hopper right about not trusting her?

Kali Prasad, a.k.a. Eight (008) makes a return in the final season of the series. She also had appeared before in the second season. Unlike Eleven who has the power of telekinesis, Kali is endowed with the power of manipulating perceptions.

Set in the 80s, this series explores how a bunch of kids in a small town join together to fight the skewed system of the government, amidst the transcendental world that they are offered.

Its synopsis, as per IMDb, goes as follows:

In 1980s Indiana, a group of young friends witness supernatural forces and secret government exploits. As they search for answers, the children unravel a series of extraordinary mysteries.

Here's why Hopper does not trust Kali in Stranger Things Season 5

Hopper's lack of trust towards Kali in Stranger Things Season 5 does not come from a place of malice or hatred, but out of protectiveness and unpredictability. Hopper's priority is Eleven's safety, and his intuition gives him a feeling that something is off.

As noted by Screen Rant, it mainly stems from the fact that Kali's powers have the ability to manipulate people's perception. So that makes it hard for people to know her true intentions and motives. This is quite a mighty power to have, one must say. It is also quite concerning too.

Kali's mind, due to everything that she has endured, is shaped in a way where she feels that she and Eleven will always be on the run and never be liberated from the oppressive forces. As a result, in episode 7 of Stranger Things Season 5, Kali, witnesses Eleven's future course of action in a vision. Based on that, she comes to the conclusion that she and Eleven must give up their lives in order to sabotage Dr. Kay's horrifying plan of action.

So Kali's inner perception of how she sees the world as well as life, does not align with Hopper's perspective. That adds another layer to why Hopper does not trust her. Hopper has already experienced the loss of a child, and Eleven too has arrived at death's door multiple times. So he is functioning from a place of fear.

Given the experience that Kali has been through, her perspective on life is also understandable. As Hopper is operating from a place of fear, she is from a place of pain, trauma, survival and exploitation. So we cannot arrive at a conclusive answer as to whether Kali can really be trusted or not.

In Season 2 of Stranger Things, Kali and Eleven's bond was marked by solidarity. In Season 5 too, Kali is still protective and caring about Eleven. But her way of caring blurs the lines of safety and ruination. After all, how Kali's character and perception develop (or even if it does) is something to realize once the series arrives at its completion.
